Senior Cody Jones
earned a spot on the preseason All-GSC team
Birmingham - The UAH men's basketball team saw their season end in heartbreak at the Gulf South Conference tournament. When a final jumpshot rimmed out on the buzzer, the season ended with a 46-45 first round loss to Delta State.
This season, league coaches have picked the Chargers to return to Southaven, placing them third in the East. The Chargers garnered 17 votes, placing them behind second place North Alabama and division favorite Valdosta State. The Blazers, ranked in the preseason top 25 in three different poll, was a unanimous selection as the East Division favorites, grabbing five first-place votes en route to 25
total points. North Alabama finished five points behind the Blazers at second-place with 20 points along with the other first-place nod. Fourth-place West Alabama (14) earned its highest-ever East Pre-Season ranking after moving from the West Division in 1995-96. West Georgia (9) and West Florida (5) rounded
out the poll.
Charger senior center Cody Jones earned a spot on the preseason All-GSC team. The 6-7 225 pounder was a member of GSC East first team in 2008-09. Guards Xavier Baldwin
and Jaime Smith
were listed among the conference Players to Watch. Smith continues a tradition at UAH as he is the third of three Smith brothers to take the hardwood at Spragins Hall. Former All-GSC standouts Joe and Jason Smith left a lasting impression on the conference landscape.
Delta State finished just two points ahead of defending champion Arkansas Tech in the West Division voting. DSU and ATU split the eight possible first-place votes, but the Statesmen totaled 46 points com-
pared to the Wonder Boys’ 44. Harding’s grabbed third-place, while Arkansas-Monticello and Christian Brothers finished in a tie for fourth-place. Completing the poll was Southern Arkansas, Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist.
The Chargers took the floor for practice on Thursday. They will open the 2009-10 season with an exhibition game at Vanderbilt on Nov. 10. Then, coach Lennie Acuff will lead his Chargers into battle for the 13th season on Nov. 16 at home against Carson-Newman.

The UAH men's basketball staff announced the signing of 6'8, 205 lb forward Andrew Donovan from Franklin Co. High School in Frankfort, Ky.
Donovan averaged 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks per game in his senior year. As a AAU standout, he was a Derek Smith All-Star at the U17 level.
Donovan can play both inside or outside. He shot over 40 percent from 3-point range last season. He also has the skills to put ball on the floor and drive. He is a good ball handler with good court vision and passing skills. Donovan is also a physical defender, who plays strong man-to-man defense. He also is tough on the boards and runs the floor very well.
After a successful senior campaign, Donovan received the Rick Bolus' Top 12 senior in Kentucky award. He was also a McDonald's All-American nominee, All-District 41 and All-Region 11. In addition, Donovan was a participant Kentucky/Ohio All-Star game. Off the court, Donovan was a Frankfort State Journal All-Scholastic team honoree.
“We are very excited to add Andy to our program. He is a perfect fit for our style of play and our University," said UAH head coach Lennie Acuff. "His ability to put the ball on the floor and shoot from outside along with his size make him an asset to our team. We are thrilled that Andy has chosen to become a Charger and we look forward to watching him grow as a student athlete.”

Jones The Chargers celebrated Senior Night for Jordan Brewer
(Franklin, Ind.), Kael Coleman (DePere, Wis.) and Casey Stafford
(Hazel Green), but it was junior center Cody Jones
(Churubusco, Ind.) who stole the show. He scored a career high 37 points and snagged 14 rebounds, leading the Chargers to a 86-77 overtime win over Flagler College on Saturday night.
The win snapped a two game losing streak for UAH, who improved to 17-10. The Chargers head to Southaven next weekend for the 2009 Gulf South Conference tournament. UAH will be the No. 3 seed in the East Division and will face No. 2 seed from the West, 25th-ranked Delta State (20-7).
UAH and Delta State split a pair of games this season. The Statesmen won the first game 63-60 in November in Cleveland, Miss. and the Chargers took the rematch 80-64 at Spragins Hall.
On Saturday, Jones had his way knocking down 15-of-25 shots, mostly from point blank range. However, he did hit a 3-pointer and made 6-of-9 freethrows. Jones even had five assists.
Coleman and Brewer also had double figures in their final home game. Coleman finished with 16 points and seven assists, while Brewer tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.
Jon Matthews led Flagler with 22 points, while D.J. Ferguson added 17, Ben De La Cruz contributed points and eight rebounds and John Pietkiewicz dropped in 13 points.
The Chargers came out firing, jumping out to a quick 16-6 lead. However, Flagler battled back with a 14-2 run to take a 20-18 lead with 9:11 left. The teams wound up fighting to a draw after 20 minutes, going in at halftime tied at 32-all.
The Saints were the ones to start the second half hot, rolling out to a 53-44 lead. But, this time UAH answered with a 12-0 run to pull back in front. Brewer capped the rally and gave the Chargers a 56-53 lead with 8:36 left.
The game remained tight down the stretch and the Chargers appeared to be poised to close out the win, leading 71-67 with only 22 seconds left. But, Stafford fouled Brandon Johnson as he grabbed his ninth rebound. Johnson made two freethrows, cutting the UAH lead to a bucket.
On the ensuing possession, the Chargers were unable to inbound the ball, giving the ball back to the Saints with 14 seconds left. On the inbound pass, De La Cruz was fouled by Brewer trying to score from in close. He would make both freethrows, tying the score at 71-all with 12 seconds left. The Chargers had a chance to win the game, but were unable to get a shot off.
In overtime, the Saints went into the deep freeze, missing their first six shots and a pair of freethrows. Meanwhile UAH scored 11 unanswered to take an 82-71 lead. Flagler didn't score until Johnson hit a jumper with 1:13 left to make it 82-73. Ferguson hit a 3-pointer later to cut the lead to 84-76, but that's as close as the Saints would get.
