BEMIDJI, Minn. - Despite snapping a lengthy scoring slump, the Alabama-Huntsville (3-9-0, 0-4-0 CHA) could not muster enough firepower to top eighth-ranked Bemidji State (10-1-1, 6-0-0 CHA) falling 6-3 on Saturday night at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn.
UAH used a 5-on-3 power play opportunity to get on the scoreboard first in the contest when junior forward Andrew Coburn (Mount Forest, Ontario) netted his third of the season with helpers from junior blueliner Davide Nicoletti (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore forward Cody Campbell (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) at 8:29 of the first.
The 1-0 lead held until 15:27 when Ryan Adams knotted the contest at 1-1. BSU's Brad Hunt then gave the home team their first lead of the night just before the close of the first frame at 17:32 with a power-play lamp lighter.
Hunt extended the lead to 3-1 early in the second when he scored at the 2:03 mark. The Chargers then cut the lead to 3-2 less than two minutes later when Campbell and Coburn combined to setup senior winger Kevin Morrison (Mississauga, Ontario) for his fourth marker of the season at 3:53. The one-goal margin held until the 14th minute of the period when the Beavers scored a pair of tallies within a 20-second timeframe to put the game away with Ryan Cramer and Matt Read getting the goals.
UAH pulled back within a pair of goals before the period drew to a close when senior winger Cale Tanaka (Stouffville, Ontario) notched his first of the season with assists from Nicoletti and junior winger Chris Fairbanks (Millford, Mich.).
BSU's Hunt then reclaimed the 3-goal cushion early in the third with a power-play strike at 3:16 earning the defenseman the first hat trick allowed by the Chargers since Oct. 21, 2006 when Wayne State's Nate Higgins accomplished the feat.
The Chargers got a big break in the middle of the third period when BSU's Darcy Findlay was whistled for a five-minute major for checking from behind but UAH failed to score with the man advantage and the game ended 6-3.
Senior netminder Blake MacNicol (Milan, Ohio) got his first start of the season making six saves and allowing three goals in just over 22 minutes of action. Junior Cameron Talbot came on in relief and took the loss allowing the game's final three goals with a 15-save effort in net. Mathieu Dugas earned the win for BSU with a 28-save performance.
The Chargers are idle for Thanksgiving weekend returning to the ice on Dec. 4-5 at Robert Morris in Pittsburgh, Pa.

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Hitting the road for the first of 10 contests away from home, the Alabama-Huntsville (3-8-0, 0-3-0 CHA) found the road tough in the opening game of the road swing falling 6-1 to No. 8 Bemidji State (9-1-1, 4-0-0 CHA) on Friday night at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn.
The opening frame saw the Beavers put the puck in the net three times within a four-minute span cruising out to a 3-0 lead. Matt Read opened the scoring at 13:21 with his ninth tally of the season from Jordan George and Ian Lowe. BSU's Ryan Cramer made it a two-goal margin less than a minute later at 14:07 with helpers from Shea Walters and Ben Kinne. Cramer then setup Jordan George for the game's third marker at 16:42.
The score held at 3-0 for the Beavers until the Chargers snapped a pair of droughts with a Brenan Barker (Long Sault, Ontario) power-play tally. Junior winger Andrew Coburn (Mount Forest, Ontario) and junior year goalie Cameron Talbot (Caledonia, Ontario) picked up assists on the play. The tally snapped an 0-for-28 streak with the man advantage for the Chargers and ended a 152:30 void without a goal.
BSU came out skating hard in the third period and quickly added a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the frame as Ian Lowe and Jamie MacQueen pushed the lead to 5-1. The Beaver's fifth goal ended Talbot's night in net as senior Blake MacNicol (Milan, Ohio) came on in relief but MacNicol was unable to stop the bleeding as BSU's Chris McKelvie made it 6-1 at 12:10 of the third.
Talbot made 17 stops in 44:51 of work while MacNicol stopped four shots in relief. Dan Bakala picked up the win with a 25-save effort. UAH finished the night 1-for-8 on the power play while BSU was 1-9 as the Charger penalty killing unit continued to be successful.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Giving up three first period goals, the Alabama-Huntsville hockey team (3-7-0) dropped a 4-0 decision to fifth-ranked UMass Lowell (7-2-1) on Saturday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
After a defensive zone turnover by the Chargers, the Riverhawks jumped on the scoreboard quickly in the first when Ben Holmstrom netted his fourth tally of the year on a feed from Chris Auger only 5:31 into the period. The one-goal margin did not last long for UML as Kory Falite lit the lamp less than a minute later at 6:17 with assists going to Scott Campbell and Maury Edwards.
The Riverhawks added to their advantage later in the first when Michael Scheu banged a shot inside the right post at 12:38 for the three-goal cushion. Joe Caveney rounded out the scoring for the Riverhawks late in the second period at 18:30 with his first collegiate tally.
Junior netminder Cameron Talbot (Caledonia, Ontario) took the loss in net with a 27-save performance while Carter Hutton earned the shutout with a 19-save night between the pipes.
The Charger power-play went 0-for-4 on the night but the UAH penalty killling unit got the job done blanking the Riverhawks power-play unit that came into the weekend as fifth best in the nation for the second straight night.
UAH now hits the road for ten straight road contests starting with a series at seventh-ranked Bemidji State next weekend.

Senior winger Kevin Morrison skates in for the 1st period breakaway goal (Courtesy: Will Nickelson)
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- If a hockey game was only 20 minutes long, the Alabama-Huntsville (3-6-0) hockey team would have pulled off an upset of the fifth-ranked UMass Lowell (6-2-1) Riverhawks as UAH outplayed the highest ranked team to ever take the ice at the Von Braun Center in the opening frame. The Riverhawks however awoke for the second period and put home two goals before eventually winning 3-1 on Friday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
That opening period got off to a bang quickly for the Chargers as on UAH's very first breakout play, sophomore forward Cody Campbell (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) hit senior linemate Kevin Morrison (Missisauga, Ontario) in stride in the neutral zone. Morrison raced past the Riverhawk's defense and netted the breakaway tally only 46 seconds into the contest. Campbell was credited with an assist along with junior forward Andrew Coburn (Mount Forest, Ontario). UAH went on to outshoot UML 9-7 in the opening frame but could not manage to extend the lead.
The second period saw the Riverhawks put an equalizer on the board jut before the halfway mark of the contest at 9:40. UML's Colin Wright banged in his second goal of the season after a mad scramble right in front of the Chargers' net to tie the contest 1-1. Matt Ferreira and Scott Campbell picked up assists on the goal.
UML took their first lead of the night just before the close of the second stanza when Wright again lit the lamp on a nice feed from Riley Wetmore at 18:26. The Riverhawks picked up an insurance tally early in the third when Michael Scheu sent a feed in front of Talbot and David Vallorani was there to redirect the pass right into the net at 4:56 of the frame.
Talbot played solid in net for the Chargers in the third making 16 saves en route to a 30-save performance. Nevin Hamilton turned away 19 shots to earn the win for the Riverhawks.
The Chargers and Riverhawks battle again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The third time was not the charm for the Alabama-Huntsville (3-5-0, 0-2-0 CHA) hockey team as the Chargers and No. 14 Bemidji State (5-0-1, 2-0-0 CHA) Beavers went to overtime for the third straight time at the Von Braun Center and the result came out the same, a 2-1 College Hockey America win for the visitors on Sunday afternoon in Huntsville.
A day after BSU's Matt Read stuck a dagger into UAH's hopes in the extra period, Ben Kinne returned the favor 1:01 into the extra frame. Kinne snagged a Charger turnover in his own defensive end just inside the blueline, raced through center ice and the fired a slapshot just inside the Chargers defensive zone that got past UAH netminder Cameron Talbot.
After the two teams played two scoreless periods to start the contest, it would be senior winger Kevin Morrison (Mississauga, Ontario), who would break open the scoreless tie at 1:31 of the third. Sophomore winger raced in on net and fired a quick shot that BSU's Dan Bakala could not corral and Morrison crashed the net on the backside and put home the rebound.
With the Chargers leading 1-0, Read, who scored both goals on Saturday night, would make a huge play for the Beavers on the fore check. Read anticpated a pass from a UAH defenseman and jumped the feed allowing him to grab the puck and skate in on net unobstructed. Read then waited for Talbot to make the first move and scored unassisted at 10:31 of the third.
The Chargers won the shot total again on Sunday 32-31 but it was for naught. Talbot took the loss in net with a 29-save outing while Bakala earned the win making 31 stops between the pipes.
Not only was it the third-straight 2-1 overtime decision at the VBC between UAH and Bemidji State but also the fourth straight 2-1 loss for the Chargers on home ice.
UAH is idle next weekend before hosting ninth-ranked UMass-Lowell at the Von Braun Center on Nov. 13-14.
