HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The third time was not the charm for the Alabama-Huntsville (3-5-0, 0-2-0 CHA) hockey team as the Chargers and No. 14 Bemidji State (5-0-1, 2-0-0 CHA) Beavers went to overtime for the third straight time at the Von Braun Center and the result came out the same, a 2-1 College Hockey America win for the visitors on Sunday afternoon in Huntsville.

A day after BSU's Matt Read stuck a dagger into UAH's hopes in the extra period, Ben Kinne returned the favor 1:01 into the extra frame.  Kinne snagged a Charger turnover in his own defensive end just inside the blueline, raced through center ice and the fired a slapshot just inside the Chargers defensive zone that got past UAH netminder Cameron Talbot.

After the two teams played two scoreless periods to start the contest, it would be senior winger Kevin Morrison (Mississauga, Ontario), who would break open the scoreless tie at 1:31 of the third.  Sophomore winger raced in on net and fired a quick shot that BSU's Dan Bakala could not corral and Morrison crashed the net on the backside and put home the rebound.

With the Chargers leading 1-0, Read, who scored both goals on Saturday night, would make a huge play for the Beavers on the fore check.  Read anticpated a pass from a UAH defenseman and jumped the feed allowing him to grab the puck and skate in on net unobstructed.  Read then waited for Talbot to make the first move and scored unassisted at 10:31 of the third.

The Chargers won the shot total again on Sunday 32-31 but it was for naught.  Talbot took the loss in net with a 29-save outing while Bakala earned the win making 31 stops between the pipes.

Not only was it the third-straight 2-1 overtime decision at the VBC between UAH and Bemidji State but also the fourth straight 2-1 loss for the Chargers on home ice.

UAH is idle next weekend before hosting ninth-ranked UMass-Lowell at the Von Braun Center on Nov. 13-14.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- For the second time this season the Alabama-Huntsville (3-4-0, 1-0-0 CHA) hockey team had a ranked opponent on the ropes but an overtime goal by Matt Read let 14th-ranked Bemidji State (4-0-1, 1-0-0 CHA) escape from the Von Braun Center with a 2-1 win on Saturday night in Huntsville in the College Hockey opener for both clubs.

Bemidji State wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with a power play tally only 1:50 into the contest.  The hero for the Beavers on the night, Read fired a wrister, grabbed his own rebound and skated behind the net and to the end line, where he banked a shot off Cameron Talbot's leg for the 1-0 lead.

After a penalty-marred second period that saw UAH whistled for five minors and BSU booked for four, the game finally began to flow again in the third period and it paid off for UAH in the third minute of action.  Senior blueliner Brennan Barker (Long Sault, Ontario) hit junior foward Neil Ruffini (Roswell, Ga.) on an outlet pass at center ice and Ruffini raced in and beat BSU's Dan Bakala to tie the game 1-1.

Despite outshooting the Beavers 8-3 in the third period, UAH could not get a goal ahead goal and Read made a play in the overtime period splittling a pair of Charger defenders and beating Talbot glove side at 3:44 of overtime.

Talbot took the loss in net for UAH making 20 saves between the pipes while Bakala stopped 29 shots as the Chargers outshot Bemidji in the contest.

The two teams battle again on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. faceoff at the VBC.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Despite a flurried third period comeback attempt, the Alabama-Huntsville (3-3) hockey team fell 2-1 to visiting Western Michigan (4-0) on Friday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

A two goal opening period opened things up for the Broncos early.  Trevor Elias, who scored Friday night's game winner drew first blood for WMU at 11:45 of the first beating UAH junior netminder Cameron Talbot (Caledonia, Ontario) glove side just inside the post.  The Bronocs then quickly pushed the lead to two goals just over two minutes later at 13:50 when Chris Clackson crashed the net on a Cam Watson rebound.

The third period saw the Chargers come out skating hard and it paid off in the sixth minute of the frame when senior blueliner Brandon Roshko (Hamilton, Ontario) hit senior winger Kevin Morrison (Mississauga, Ontario) in stride and Morrison blew past the Bronco defense fired a wrister on net that was saved and then put home his own rebound at 5:45.

UAH went on to outshoot WMU 16-6 in the third period but failed to get the equalizer despite several quality scoring chances.

Talbot took the loss in net with a 22-save effort while Western Michigan's Riley Gill earned the win with a 29-save performance.

The Chargers continue home action next weekend hosting Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday night's Halloween match begins at 7:05 p.m. followed by Sunday's 1:05 p.m .tilt

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- In front of the fourth-largest home crowd (3,873) in College Hockey America history, the Alabama-Huntsville (3-2) hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Western Michigan (3-0) on Friday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

After the two squads played to a scoreless draw after the opening period,  the Chargers drew first blood early in the second when freshman center Justin Cseter (Menomonie, Wisc.) put home his team-leading fourth marker of the season.  The power-play tally came at 3:50 of the frame with an assist going to fellow rookies Curtis deBruyn (Calgary, Alberta), as the blueliner picked up his first collegiate point and Keenan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta).

With less than two minutes remaining, it looked like the Chargers might take the one-goal advantage into the final break but WMU's Cam Watson got loose behind the UAH defense on a breakaway.  As Watson raced up the ice with a clear path, he was tripped by a Charger defender and earned a penalty shot.  Watson lined up the puck and was able to beat UAH junior netminder Cameron Talbot (Caledonia, Ontario) stick side to tie the game at one at 18:32.

The tie lasted until 9:42 of the third when Trevor Elias put the rebound of a Jared Katz deflection that went off the crossbar in the net to take a 2-1 lead that the Broncos would never relinquish.

Talbot made 27 saves in the loss while WMU's Jerry Kunh earned the win with a 31-save effort.  The Chargers won the shot battle 32-29 including a 16-shot second period that was the most by a UAH club in a frame since the Blue and White fired 18 at Niagara in March 2007.

The Chargers and Broncos battle again on Saturday night at 7:05 at the Von Braun Center.
