HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Using some last-minute heroics, the Alabama-Huntsville (7-13-2, 3-6-1 CHA) hockey team came from behind to earn a series sweep over College Hockey America foe Niagara (7-15-3, 2-6-1 CHA) with a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Sophomore blueliner Tom Durnie (Calgary, Alberta) gave the Chargers fans something to cheer about early in the contest when the defenseman rifled a slap shot from just inside the blue line for an early lead at 5:38 of the contest.  Freshman center Matti Järvinen picked up a helper on the play.

The 1-0 UAH held until just past the midpoint of the contest when Chris Moran ended UAH junior goalie Cameron Talbot's (Caledonia, Ontario) shutout bid at 10:04 of the second.  The power-play strike was assisted by Tyler Gotto and Marc Zanette. The Purple Eagles went on to take their first lead of the afternoon just before the close of the period when Brian Haczyk split a pair of UAH defenders and skated in on net untouched for a marker at 18:13 of the second.

The 2-1 advantage held for NU until 12:50 of the final frame when Durnie hit senior winger Cale Tanaka (Stouffville, Ontario) in the neutral zone.  Tanaka gathered the pass and rushed into the offensive zone a fired a wrister past NU netminder Chris Noonan.  Talbot picked up an assist on the play as well marking his third of the season.

The third period saw several other chances for the Chargers to regain the lead but it took a tic-tac-toe play with under a minute remaining to earn the win and seal the sweep.  A late hooking call gave UAH a man advantage as the clock was winding down and it paid off with 24 seconds remaining when freshman winger Keenan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta) found junior center Neil Ruffini (Roswell, Ga.) out in front of the net and Ruffini quickly tapped the puck into the net.

The Purple Eagles opted to go with an empty net for the final 24 ticks but were unable to even get a shot off.  Talbot earned the win in net with a 31-save effort marking his 10th-straight contest with 30-plus saves.  Noon took the loss with a 35-save afternoon as the Chargers put a season-high 38 shots on net.

The sweep is the first for the Chargers since the 2005-06 season.

UAH is idle next weekend before hitting the road to take on Niagara on their home ice on February 12-13 at Dwyer Arena.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Taking the ice at the Von Braun Center for the first time in 75 days after a 10-game road trip, the Alabama-Huntsville (6-13-2, 2-6-1 CHA) hockey team skated to a 3-2 win over Niagara (7-14-3, 2-5-1 CHA) in College Hockey America play on Friday night in Huntsville.

A defensive turnover led to the night's first goal as Niagara's Marc Zanette fed the puck back to the blueline to defenseman Derek Foam, who sent a low slap shot that beat UAH junior netminder Cameron Talbot (Caledonia, Ontario) glove side at 4:58 for the early 1-0 lead.

The second period saw the Chargers come out strong and it paid off at 5:42 of the stanza when UAH got a 2-on-1 breakaway.  Senior winger Cale Tanaka (Stouffville, Ontario) brought the puck down the right side of the sheet and fed the puck across the slot to sophomore forward Jamie Easton (Edmonton, Alberta), who buried the puck in the back of the net for a 1-1 tie.

The Chargers and Purple Eagles then traded unassisted tallies later in the period.  NU caught a big break at 13:19 when Zanette blocked a power-play shot from a UAH defenseman and gathered the puck in the neutral zone and skated in alone on Talbot and managed to put the puck in the net with a back-handed deke.  The Chargers knotted the contest at 2-2 less than two minutes later when freshman center Matti Järvinen won an offensive-zone faceoff, slipped through the Niagara defenders and sent a low-angle wrister past NU goalie Andrew Hare at 15:04.

UAH used the power play to take their first lead of the night in the third period as Järvinen won the faceoff back to senior blueliner Brandon Roshko (Hamilton, Ontario), who found junior winger Andrew Coburn (Mount Forest, Ontario) in the slot.  Coburn launched a wrister just inside the right post at 12:50 of the frame for the game winner.

Talbot picked up the win in net for the Chargers with a 30-save effort while Hare took the loss making 27 saves.

The teams wrap up the two-game set on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.
