Senior 1B Ryan McCrory launched three long balls against the Blazers on Saturday
VALDOSTA, Ga. -- It took an extra inning affair but the Alabama-Huntsville (16-7, 3-2 GSC) rallied from a 17-5 blowout in game one to earn a split in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader with a 10-8 win in eight innings over No. 22 Valdosta State (21-10, 1-1 GSC) in Valdosta, Ga.
Game two got off to a bang for the Chargers as junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) launched his first home run of the season in the top of the first. A one-out walk by senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile) and back-to-back singles by senior second baseman Nicky Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) and senior designated hitter Josh Bolan (Decatur) brought McCrory home to make it a 2-0 lead.
The Blazers quickly answered with a three-run bottom of the frame as Clayton Cain hit a home run with three aboard to give VSU a 3-2 lead. UAH responded with a four-run second to retake the lead to counter the Blazers' three-run first. The Chargers loaded the bases with no outs and Parker came to the dish and hit a fly to right that scored sophomore shortstop Corey Trapp (Russellville), who leadoff the frame with being hit-by-pitch. McCrory launched his second long ball of the afternoon for a three-run blast. Putting the Chargers back in front 6-3.
The Chargers added to the lead in the third behind RBI singles by senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham) and junior left fielder Corey Whittle (Cullman) to make it an 8-3 advantage. Valdosta responded with a three-run bottom of the frame to make it an 8-6 score after three innings.
The score held there at 8-6 until the sixth inning when VSU pushed across a pair of runs that would eventually force an extra inning in the scheduled seven-game contest. The eighth inning saw the Parker and McCrory prove to be the difference the contest as Parker laced a two-out single to centerfield before McCrory ripped a shot down the right field line for his second homer of the contest and his fifth run driven in.
Junior closer Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.) picked up the win on the hill working the final two and one-thirds innings allowing one hit and two walks while fanning a pair.
The series opener saw the Blazers explode for 11 runs in the first three innings before UAH finally got on the board in the fourth when McCrory hit his fourth homer of the season. The Chargers' other run came in the sixth when senior catcher Christopher Parkman (Raleigh, Miss.) hit his first dinger of 2010.
The two squads battle for the series in a Noon rubber game on Sunday in Valdosta, Ga.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Playing at the legendary Rickwood Field in Birmingham, the Alabama-Huntsville (15-6) baseball team cruised to a 14-3 win over homestanding Miles on Wednesday afternoon.
The Chargers got the offense rolling in the top of the second loading the bases right out of the gate. Senior designated hitter Josh Bolan (Decatur) ledoff the frame by getting beaned before senior catcher Christopher Parkman (Raleigh, Miss.) and sophomore shortstop Corey Trapp (Russellville) each singled to put a Charger on each base. Senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham) stepped up and laced a double bringing Bolan and Parkman home to score and giving UAH a 2-0 advantage. Junior leftfielder Corey Whittle (Cullman) then made it a 4-0 contest with another double bringing Trapp and Ray across the dish.
Bolan ledoff the third reaching on error before Trapp earned a one-out walk to give UAH two aboard for Ray, who delivered his second extra-bases hit in as many innings with a triple scoring both Bolan and Trapp. Ray then came home to make it 7-0 on a sacrifice fly from Whittle.
Miles mangaged to scrape out a run in the fourth but UAH answered back with a two-out rally as senior centerfielder Jeremy Dorrence (Decatur) was plunked, swiped second base and scored on a single by Bolan making it a 8-1 game.
The Golden Bears responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame but UAH answered right back plating five runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Senior second baseman Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) ledoff the frame with a single and then scored on a Dorrence double. A pair of wild pitches brought Dorrence home to score before the Chargers picked up the rest of the five runs on RBI singles by Whittle, junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle), and senior Ryan McCrory (Mobile).
Ray rounded out the scoring in the seventh with his third extra-base hit of the afternoon with a double scoring Parkman.
Sophomore Ryan Griffin (Athens) made the start on the hill going four innings allowing one earned runs on two hits while striking out five to earn the win. Seniors Corbin Holland (Gadsden), Taylor Scott (Franklin, Tenn.), Jermaine Barksdale (Carlsbad, N.M.) and juniors Byne Gooden (Millbrook) and Jake Tubbs (Childersburg) worked in relief.
The Chargers return to Gulf South Conference play this weekend with a trip to Valdosta State on Saturday and Sunday.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Aided by a pair of home runs by senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile), the Alabama-Huntsville (14-6, 2-1 GSC) took Sunday's Gulf South Conference rubber game 10-3 over visiting West Alabama (14-8, 1-2 GSC) marking the first series win for the Chargers over periennial GSC East power UWA.
After giving up a run to the Tigers in the top of the first, the Chargers answered with a run of their own in the second with a two-out rally. Senior catcher Christopher Parkman (Raleigh, Miss.) got things started with a double to right and came home to score single to center by sophomore shortstop Corey Trapp (Russellville).
A pair of singles in the third inning by junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) and senior designated hitter Jerome Dunning (Montgomery) gave UAH runner's on the corner with one away. An infield single by senior second baseman Nick Huckaby brought Parker home to score and gave the Chargers their first lead of the afternoon.
The fourth inning saw UAH put a pair of runs up on the board quickly as Trapp ledoff the inning with a double and was followed by a triple by senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham). Junior leadoff hitter Corey Whittle (Cullman) sent a deep fly ball that scored Ray to make it a 4-1 contest. McCrory was then beaned with two away in the inning and moved up 90 feet on a single back up the middle by Dunning. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring postion before a balk plated McCrory and rounded out the three-run inning.
West Alabama closed the gap to within a run with lone runs in the fifth and sixth innings but McCrory erased one of those runs with a solo blast to leadoff the seventh to make it a 6-3 lead for the Chargers. The Chargers then increased the margin with a four-run eighth to put the game out of reach.
After Trapp was beaned to leadoff the stanza, Whittle and Parker singled bringing Trapp across the plate. UWA opted to bring in their fourth pitcher of the contest and McCrory rudely greeted Dom Sapp with a three-run dinger over the right-field fence at Joe Davis Stadium.
Junior righty Dustin Bryant (Fyffe) picked up the win with a strong performance on the hill. Bryant tossed the first five and one-thirds innings allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks while fanning five Tigers. Junior Lance Gibson (Toxey), senior Shawn Herring (Florence) and junior Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.) each worked in relief combining to allow only two hits the rest of the afternoon.
The Chargers step outside of GSC play during midweek play with a 2 p.m. game at Miles on Wednesday.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Opening up the 2010 Gulf South Conference season on Saturday afternoon, the Alabama-Huntsville (13-6) baseball team came withn a base hit of a doubleheader sweep over West Alabama taking game one 10-3 before falling 7-6 in the nightcap at Huntsville's Joe David Stadium.
Game two of the day saw the Chargers mount a solid comeback after falling behind 7-0 after the Tigers' first three at bats. UAH loaded the bases quickly as senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham) ledoff the frame with a single and was followed by a Corey Whittle (Cullman) walk and a single to left by junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle). With the bases full of Chargers, senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile) sent a drive to right field that brought Ray in to score and moved Whittle to third on a sacrifice fly. With the goose egg off the scoreboard, the Chargers plated a second run in the inning thanks to a balk by West Alabama starter Colter MIllican that brought Whittle home from third.
Back-to-back singles by senior centerfielder Jeremy Dorrence (Decatur) and senior catcher Christopher Parkman (Raleigh) to leadoff the inning got a rally going in the fourth. The duo both came home to score on an infield single by Ray that saw an errant throw bring both runs home and see Ray end up on second. A two-out single back up the middle brought Ray home to score and cut the lead to 7-5. UAH added a run in the fifth when senior second baseman reached on a one-out single, swiped second base and came across the dish on a Parkman single back up the box.
The seventh inning saw the Chargers load the bases with one away but UWA closer Brian Burgess ended the chance to earn his fourth save of the season.
Senior Chase Earl took the loss for the Chargers going one and two thirds innings in the start. Earl gave up six runs and seven hits while walking a pair before freshman Cody Barrett (Mufreesboro, Tenn.) came on in relief. Barrett went a strong four and one thirds innings allowing one run and three hits while fanning one and striking out three.
Game one saw just the opposite of the nightcap as UAH jumped out in front early putting nine runs on the scoreboard in the first two innings along with chasing UWA's Cory Lopez after only one and two-third innings. Back-to-back leadoff walks by Ray and Whittle along with a one-out single to left center loaded the bases for senior designated hitter Jerome Dunning (Montgomery), who delievered a single back up the middle scoring both Whittle and Ray.
A Huckaby fielder's choice kept runners on the corners with two outs before a wild pitch moved up both Huckaby and McCrory, who scored. UAH loaded the bases again after Dorrence walked and Parkman was hit by pitch. Two more gifts brought two more runs home as sophomore shortstop Corey Trapp (Russellville) picked up an RBI with a walk before Ray was beaned bringing Dorrence home. Whittle then rounded out the scoring in the inning with an infield single that plated Parkman.
The Chargers wouldn't score again until the eighth when Parker ledoff the frame with a single to left and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Parker then came home on a West Alabama overthrow to round out the scoring in the game.
Junior starter Ryan Frevert (Liberty, Mo.) was solid in the start going six innings on the hill. The southpaw allowed four hits and three runs while striking out five and walking four. Seniors Jacob Wray (Hartslle) and Shawn Herring (Florence) were both near perfect in relief with Wray working a the seventh innning allowing only a hit-by-pitch follwed by Herring's final two unblemished innings.
Sunday afternoon features a rubber game between the two clubs with first pitch at 1 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On the heels of driving in 13 runs in four games, Alabama-Huntsville senior second baseman Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) has been named the Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Week as announced by the league.
The veteran infielder played a huge role in the Chargers' 5-0 week including a four-game road sweep of Arkansas-Monticello. Huckaby plated 13 of UAH's 54 runs on the week along with three multi-hit outings. The senior also was stellar in the field handling 18 chances without an error.
The Chargers open Gulf South Conference action this weekend hosting West Alabama on Saturday and Sunday at Joe Davis Stadium. Saturday's doubleheader features a Noon first pitch while Sunday's contest gets underway at 1 p.m.
