HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - After leading the University of Alabama
in Huntsville baseball team to its second-consecutive appearance in the Gulf
South Conference tournament, interim head coach Hunter Royer has been hired as
the fourth head coach in the history of the program.
"I feel extremely blessed and honored to be the new head coach
at UAH,"noted Royer. "I would like to
thank our Athletics Director Mr. Jim Harris for this opportunity. This is a
dream come true and I must also take the time to thank my family for their
support and patience over the past few years as I pursued this goal."
After serving the past three seasons as assistant coach including the 2009 season when he was named the top collegiate assistant coach in the state of Alabama by the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association,
Royer took over the reigns as interim head coach midway through the 2010 season
leading the Chargers to a 15-13 mark including the first GSC Tournament win
since 2003.
"Coach Royer did a tremendous job taking the reins of the
Charger baseball program this season and we are excited about the future of the
UAH baseball," noted Athletics Director Jim Harris. "His hard work leading the
team this season and his tireless efforts as assistant coach over the past few
seasons made this an easy choice."
Royer joined the Charger program as UAH's top assistant in
the fall of 2006 after a three-year stint at West Alabama where he helped the
Tigers to back-to-back NCAA regional appearances.
"I'm excited about the chance to continue our improvement
here on the field and in the classroom," noted Royer. "I'm looking forward to
furthering our relationships in the local baseball community and growing the
support of UAH baseball."
Married to the former, Elisabeth Ashley, the couple resides
in Huntsville.

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The 2010 season drew to a close on Wednesday morning for the Alabama-Huntsville (27-18) baseball team, as the Chargers dropped an 8-3 decision to West Florida (36-17) in an elimination game in the Gulf South Conference Tournament held at Ferriss Field in Cleveland, Miss.
The GSC East Division Champion Argonauts took an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and another tally in the third before the Chargers tied things up with one swing of the bat on a long ball by senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham) that plated a pair of runs. The homer was Ray's second of the tournament and drove in senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile), who had doubled earlier in the frame.
West Florida answered right back with a run in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead taking advantage of an error and wild pitch to score. UWF then added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to push the lead to 5-2. The Chargers cut the lead to 5-3 in the seventh with a lone run on an RBI single by Ray that scored sophomore shortstop Cory Trapp (Russellville), who singled earlier in the stanza and moved into scoring position on a McCrory single.
That is as close as the Chargers would come to advancing however as the Argos added three runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to put the game away.
Sophomore Ryan Griffin (Athens) took the loss on the hill for the Chargers going six and one-thirds innings. UWF tagged Griffin for four earned runs and eight hits while he issued three strikeouts and walked none.
With the loss, the Chargers are eliminated from the GSC Tournament and finish the season 27-18.

CLEVELAND, Miss. - In what equated to a 13-round knock-down drag-out fight, the Alabama-Huntsville (27-17) advanced in the 2010 Gulf South Conference Tournament eliminating 14th-ranked host Delta State 20-18, the most combined runs scored in school history for the Chargers. Tuesday afternoon's win is the first GSC Tournament win for the Chargers since the 2003 event.
The contest at Ferriss Field in Cleveland, Miss., was a tale of threes as UAH dominated the first three innings outscoring Delta State 12-3 before the Statesmen roared back outscoring the Chargers 13-5 in the middle innings to take their first lead of the night. The final three innings proved to be the difference as the Chargers outscored the Statesmen 3-2 to take the win.
The Charger offense soared behind 20 hits including three-hit performances by seniors Ryan McCrory (Mobile) and Josh Bolan (Trinity) and sophomore Cory Trapp (Russellville). McCrory was 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and three driven including two on his 13th home run of the season. Bolan also got in on the long-ball activity hitting his fifth of the season as part of a 3-for-4 afternoon with three runs scored and two driven in. Trapp put in a 3-for-6 day at the dish with three runs scored and one driven in.
Joining Bolan and Trapp crossing the plate three times were junior left fielder Corey Whittle (Cullman), senior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) and senior second baseman Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.)
Junior closer Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.) picked up the win working the final four and two-thirds innings. The sidearmer allowed three earned runs on four hits and a trio of free passes while fanning six. Coming into the contest, the juniro had not allowed an earned run in 12 and two-thirds innings dating back to Feb. 20th at Harding. Lazzaroni's outing was the longest of the season eclipsing the two and one-thirds innings he worked at Valdosta State earlier in the season.
The Chargers advance to Wednesday's 9:30 a.m. elimination contest against West Florida at Ferriss Field.

Senior 1B Ryan McCrory picked up his second All-GSC first team honor on Tuesday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Helping lead the Alabama-Huntsville baseball squad to back-to-back appearances in the Gulf South Conference tournament, six Chargers have been named to the All-GSC East Division teams as announced by the league on Thursday.
Headlining the group are three first-team senior selections in first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile), second baseman Nick Huckaby and outfielder Bradley Ray (Auburn). McCrory's selection marks the second time in as many seasons that the slugger has been tabbed by the GSC East coaches as the top first baseman. The lefty leads the Chargers in home runs (12), RBI (61) and slugging percentage.
A former GSC East Freshman of the Year, Huckaby picks up his first, first-team honor at second base after earning second-team honors last season as a junior. The veteran leads the team in hits (58) as well as stolen bases (20). Ray has been a standout as well in his first year in the UAH lineup leading the Chargers with 50 runs scored and five triples.
The GSC Second team selections are senior designated hitter Josh Bolan (Trinity) along with junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) and junior closer Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.). With a couple of injuries down the stretch opening the door, Bolan took advantage of the opportunity and made himself a mainstay in the middle of the UAH lineup en route to the all-conference honors. The veteran leads the team with a .407 average at the dish and a .778 slugging percentage having notched four homers, six doubles and a triple in only 54 at bats.
Parker picks up his first all-league nod ranking second on the club in hitting at .383 and leads the Chargers with 13 doubles on the season as well as hit-by-pitch (19). Lazzaroni's work on the hill has been nearly perfect this season having allowed only one earned run in 16 innings pitched for a 0.56 ERA. The Georgian has notched five saves and boasts the lowest ERA in the GSC of anyone with 15 appearances or more.
The Chargers open the 2010 GSC Tournament on Saturday taking on top-ranked Southern Arkansas at 4:15 at USA Baseball Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
