For the first time since 2003, the UAH women's soccer team will be headed to the Gulf South Conference tournament. On the strength of a 2-1 win over Christian Brothers on Wednesday at Charger Field the Lady Chargers will join the UAH men's team at the tournament which will be played in Pensacola, Fla. Nov. 6-7. It marks the first time since 2001 that both teams will represent UAH at the GSC tournament.
Devin Newman
and Amber Cryer
scored the goals for the Lady Chargers (9-6, 4-3 in the GSC), while Kady Reisman added an assist.
Newman got UAH on the board first in the 54th minute, taking a pass from Reisman and bouncing a shot passed charging CBU goalkeeper Christina Barone. The lead held up through first half. Then, in the second half, Reisman fired a shot from the right side of the box that hit the crossbar. Cryer redirected the carom through the crowd into the back of the net to give UAH a 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute.
Eight minutes later, CBU cut the lead in half when Anna Laskarzewska came up with the ball in a scramble in front of the Lady Charger net and punched it in with less than 10 minutes left in the game.
However, the UAH defense stiffened and CBU never got another clean shot on goal. CBU was held to only four shots for the game, three on goal. Lady Chargers keeper Marissa Middleton
backed the tenacious Lady Charger defense with three saves.
In contrast UAH had 20 shots on the day, 10 in each half. Barone stopped eight of the 10 shots-on-goal.
The Lady Chargers, ranked 8th in the South Region, have one more nonconference match on Saturday at Bryan College before packing up the head south for the GSC Tournament. UAH will be the third seed in the tournament and will face the No. 2 seed North Alabama in the first round.
