Veteran soccer coach Mitchell tapped to lead UAH programs |

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Bringing over 14 years of collegiate
coaching experience to the table, the University of Alabama in Huntsville
announces Mike Mitchell as the new head coach of the Charger men's and women's
soccer teams.
"I'm extremely excited about this opportunity for me and my
family," remarked Mitchell. "The
Chargers soccer programs are sleeping giants here in a great soccer community
in Huntsville and Madison. The local
youth programs have top-notch coaching and always produce soccer players that
can play at the highest level."
Having worked with local youth programs for more than 20
years, Mitchell also brings a wealth of experience having coached previously at
Clayton State University, Auburn University at Montgomery, Brewton-Parker
College, Oglethorpe University, LaGrange College and Dekalb Community College.
"We are extremely thrilled to bring Mike aboard to lead both
our men's and women's soccer programs here at UAH," noted Director of Athletics
Jim Harris. "His vast knowledge of the collegiate game and soccer around the
southeast will be a vital part of the continued success of our programs. His excitement and fire to grow soccer not
only here at UAH but around the area will be a tremendous asset for the entire
soccer community."
A three-time Georgia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, the
Atlanta native has coached 23 collegiate All-America players, six national team
players and Hjortur Hjartarson, who was a two-time NAIA Player of the
Year. Mitchell holds a USSF B, NSCAA
National Soccer license and is a member of the US Soccer Association and the
Georgia State Soccer Association.
"I'm really looking forward to being a part of the soccer
community in the Huntsville area," said Mitchell. "My family and I are
delighted about becoming part of the UAH family."
An all-conference standout for Division I Georgia Southern,
Mitchell eventually graduated from Georgia State with a bachelor's degree in marketing
before earning his master's of business administration from Mercer University.
Married to the former Kristi Skipper of Montgomery, the
couple has one daughter, Cameron (18) and two sons, Thomas (20) and Evan (12).
Becoming just the fourth men's head coach in over 30 years
of soccer and the third women's head coach since the program's inception, Mitchell
succeeds Tafadzwa "Lincoln" Ziyenge, who resigned to take over at Division I
Arkansas State.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - With the 2010 season quickly approaching, the Alabama-Huntsville women's soccer team announces the signing of midfielder Emily Hancock from Swansea, Wales.
"Emily is a tough physical defender, who brings a lot of leadership qualities to our team," noted UAH interim coach Joe Nemzer. "Her up tempo and tenacious defending style will really fit in nicely into our system next season. She's coming from a great program at MTSU run by Aston Rhoden and I think her experience will help us tremendously. "
Hancock played club for the Swansea City Ladies FC.

Penalty kicks doom Lady Chargers in GSC Tournament |

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Despite taking the field in nearly ideal playing conditions, three penalty kicks would cloud the skies as the Alabama-Huntsville (9-7-0) women's soccer fell 4-0 to North Alabama (18-2-1) in the opening round of the 2009 Gulf South Conference tournament in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lions took an early lead in the contest thanks to the first penalty kick earned by North Alabama when junior goalkeeper Marissa Middleton
(Olathe, Kan.) tackled UNA's Hollie Loud without making a clear play on the ball. Loud then stepped up and delivered the penalty kick inside the right post at 7:17 of the opening half.
The Lady Chargers threatened several times in the first half including a chance in the 26th minute when freshman midfielder drove a scorching free kick in on net but UNA's Alex McLay was there for the save. Later in the frame, the Lady Chargers came close to tying the contest in the 36th minute when sophomore midfielder Luting Sun
(Palatine, Ill.) hit the crossbar just inside the right post.
North Alabama added to their lead early in the second half when the Lions got a numbers advantage inside the box and Stephanie Bradshaw tapped the ball over to Tassia Augusto, who sent the ball just inside the left post for a 2-0 lead at 50:02.
Two additional penalty kicks sewed the game away for the Lions with Chloe Roberts scoring at 60:08 and Agosto adding to the lead at 68:23.
Middleton worked the first 69:47 of the contest allowing all four goals and making four saves before freshman Lauren Kelly
(Huntsville) came on in relief making two saves the rest of the way for UAH. McLay earned the shutout in net with a four-save effort.
Freshman foward Cady Reisman
(Memphis, Tenn.) was honored for her play in the contest with a selection to the GSC All-Tournament team.
The loss wraps up the 2009 season for the Lady Chargers as UAH bids farewell to seniors Lauren Burns, Devin Newman
and Megan White.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After helping lead the Alabama-Huntsville women's soccer team back to postseason play for the first time since 2003, UAH senior forward Devin Newman
(Evans, Ga.) has been named to the All-Gulf South Conference second-team as voted on by the coaches previoulsy and announced by the league on Wednesday.
Leading the Lady Chargers with ten goals scored on the season, Newman ranks tied for seventh in the league in goal scoring. Of her ten goals, six have been game winners for UAH this season helping the Blue and White to 9-6-0 record.
UAH opens the Gulf South Conference tournament on Friday morning as the No. 3 seed taking on second seeded North Alabama at 11 a.m. at the Brosnham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Fla. The Lady Chargers also moved up a notch in the latest NCAA South Region Poll coming in at No. 7 in the latest rankings. Ranked No. 1 nationally, West Florida leads the poll followed by Florida Tech, Rollins, North Alabama, Florida Southern and Saint Leo. The winners of the Gulf South Conference and Sunshine State Conference tournaments earn automatic berths into the NCAA regionals followed by the next four highest ranked teams.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Giving up a pair of goals in a three-minute span, the Alabama-Huntsville (5-9-1, 2-5-1 GSC)women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 Gulf South Conference decision to homestanding Christian Brothers (10-6-1, 4-2-1 GSC) in the season finale for the Lady Chargers.
The Lady Chargers drew first blood at 20:01 when Camila Cortez (Recife, Brazil) put home a free kick from 25 yards out to give UAH a 1-0 lead. The Lady Bucs responded with an equalizer over 12 minutes later when Anna Laskarzewska scored at 32:49.
The 1-1 tie would not even last three minutes however as Elin Svavarsdottir put CBU out in front with what would prove to be the game-tying goal at 35:41.
Freshman netminder Rachel Marsicano
(Tampa, Fla.) made two saves in the loss while CBU's Libby Hake made five stops as UAH outshot the Lady Bucs 6-4.
