PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Despite taking the field in nearly ideal playing conditions, three penalty kicks would cloud the skies as the Alabama-Huntsville (9-7-0) women's soccer fell 4-0 to North Alabama (18-2-1) in the opening round of the 2009 Gulf South Conference tournament in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lions took an early lead in the contest thanks to the first penalty kick earned by North Alabama when junior goalkeeper Marissa Middleton
(Olathe, Kan.) tackled UNA's Hollie Loud without making a clear play on the ball. Loud then stepped up and delivered the penalty kick inside the right post at 7:17 of the opening half.
The Lady Chargers threatened several times in the first half including a chance in the 26th minute when freshman midfielder drove a scorching free kick in on net but UNA's Alex McLay was there for the save. Later in the frame, the Lady Chargers came close to tying the contest in the 36th minute when sophomore midfielder Luting Sun
(Palatine, Ill.) hit the crossbar just inside the right post.
North Alabama added to their lead early in the second half when the Lions got a numbers advantage inside the box and Stephanie Bradshaw tapped the ball over to Tassia Augusto, who sent the ball just inside the left post for a 2-0 lead at 50:02.
Two additional penalty kicks sewed the game away for the Lions with Chloe Roberts scoring at 60:08 and Agosto adding to the lead at 68:23.
Middleton worked the first 69:47 of the contest allowing all four goals and making four saves before freshman Lauren Kelly
(Huntsville) came on in relief making two saves the rest of the way for UAH. McLay earned the shutout in net with a four-save effort.
Freshman foward Cady Reisman
(Memphis, Tenn.) was honored for her play in the contest with a selection to the GSC All-Tournament team.
The loss wraps up the 2009 season for the Lady Chargers as UAH bids farewell to seniors Lauren Burns, Devin Newman
and Megan White.
