Carrollton, Ga. - The Charger softball team lost both of their games on Sunday, dropping a 2-1 decision to Rollins and a 6-3 setback to Augusta State. With the losses, the second-ranked Chargers fell to 13-4 and have lost three in a row.
In the first game, Rollins scored two runs in the third inning on a pair of wild pitches. Senior pitcher Whitney Hawkins
cut the lead in half with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but that would be all the Chargers could muster as they were limited to only two hits.
Hawkins (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season after pitching seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits. She struck out six and walked one.
In the loss to Augusta State, the Chargers collapsed in the fifth inning, surrendering five runs to the Jaguars. The Chargers tried to rally late, but the hole was too deep. UAH had several chances to score in the game but stranded 11 runners.
Whitney Gilbert
(6-3) took the loss for UAH. She worked four innings, allowed two runs on two hits, struck out two and walked two.
Sam Deep
and Kelli Long
each had two hits for UAH. Emily Roach
also homered, while Kellie Johnson
doubled and drove in two runs.
This week the Chargers have a brutal schedule, featuring three top 10 teams and two conference foes. On Wednesday, the Chargers head to Dahlonega, Ga. to face No. 1 North Georgia. Then on Thursday, 8th-ranked Le Moyne, an Elite Eight team from 2009, comes to Charger Field, followed by the Gulf South Conference opening doubleheader against No. 4 Valdosta State on Saturday. The weekend wraps up with a pair against West Florida in another GSC twin bill.
