Wilson Sophomore sprinter and former Bob Jones High standout Richard Wilson was selected by the NCAA to compete in the 60m at the Indoor Track National Championship in Albuquerque, NM next week. The 60m prelims will be held on Friday, March 12th at 5:35 pm. The finals we be held on Saturday at 4:20 pm. The selection committee took the top 13 on the National Performace List, and Wilson will go into the championship in a tie for the ninth fastest time. The top eight will be awarded All-American honors.
"Richard has worked very hard over the last year to reach this level of success, and I am very excited that he is getting this opportunity to compete on the national level for the first time," said UAH track coach David Cain.
"Coach (Soyini) Thompson-Murray, my assistant coach, deserves a lot of credit for Richard's improvement. She does an outstanding job with our sprinters, and she has prepared Richard to be one of the best."
Along with the good news, there was heartbreak for the women's 4 x 400m relay squad. They were ranked 12th in the nation, and the top 11 were selected. "Being the first one left out by .32 of a second stings a little," said Cain.
Track team makes most of last indoor
meet at Anderson
The Chargers took advantage of one last opportunity
to compete indoors as season bests were achieved in five events, with three
being school records at the AU Fred Wilt Memorial at Anderson University. For national qualifying purposes, the times are adjusted
due to Anderson's track being flat and not banked.
The women's 4x400m relay (Leah Sparks,
Rebecca Hilt, Alex Lopez-Rogina, and Julia Nagle) came into the meet
ranked 19th on the national list, and moved up to 12th with a winning time of
3:53.76 that converted to 3:52.56.
Hilt also improved her postition on the national
list, as she won the 400m with a time of 57.77 which has a time conversion of
57.47.
Latrice Johnson made the national list with her
winning time of 7.20 in the 55m. Richard Wilson also won the 55m with a time of
6.40, which was just off his best of the season.
Will Rodgers had a breakthrough race in the 5000m
as he shattered the school record with a huge personal best time by 24 seconds. Rodgers won the closely contested race by .01 of a second in a finish time of
14:54.56. The previous record was 15:04.24, held by Brandon York.
Jaion Rayford set the new school standard in the
400m with his winning time of 50.28.
Luke Beck won Pole Vault with a clearance of 15' 5"
and just missed on two very good attempts at 16'1".
The track team closed out the indoor regular season
with six women and six men on the national performance lists. That is the most
in the program's history.
"This indoor season has been without question the
best we have ever had. I think the national performance list is a good gauge of
how well your team is doing," Cain commented. "With us having several make the list, it shows our
team is making progress towards being a national caliber team."
The outdoor track season gets
underway Saturday at the Bulldog Relays hosted by Alabama
A&M.

Blacksburg, Va. - Charge On, is exactly what the UAH track team did
this past weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge. The team
posted marks on the national performance list in seven events, while breaking
five school records.
Richard Wilson continued his quest for
nationals, as he once again lowered his own school record in the 60m to
6.82, which currently ranks him 11th nationally. In 2009, the top 14 in the
60m at the end of the season competed at the national
championship.
The men's Distance Medley Relay destroyed the old
school record as they finished with a time of 10:04.21 which ranks them 12th
nationally. The relay is made up by a 1200m, 400m, 800m, and 1600m legs. Josh
Moshier led off with a 3:03.5, Jaion Rayford ran 49.5, Stevie Dolan ran 1:56.6,
and Will Rodgers anchored with a 4.14.2.
Luke Beck placed second in the pole vault, clearing
15' 9", just a 1/4 inch below his school record. He remains 17th on the
performance list.
Jeniffer Cherono, in her UAH 5000m debut, crushed
the school record in impressive fashion with a time of 17:18.78, and placed
second. That time ranks her 23rd in the nation.
Rebecca Hilt had a break-through race, as she made
the national list the the 400m with a time of 57.51. That time placed her 10th
in the meet, and ranks her 30th nationally.
The women's 4x400m relay (Leah Sparks, Rebecca Hilt, Alex Lopez-Rogina, and Julia
Nagle) made the indoor national
list for the second year in a row with a time of 3:55.59.
"We had several amazing performances this weekend.
The team has really improved dramatically this season, and it shows on the
national performance lists," said UAH track coach David Cain. "We have more athletes ranked nationally than ever
before, and I am excited about what the future holds for us this
spring."
The Charger track team will wrap up the indoor
regular season this weekend at the AU Fred Wilt Memorial Indoor Invite in
Anderson, IN. The NCAA will announce the field of competitors for the DII
Indoor Track National Championship next Tuesday. Nationals will be held in
Alberquerque, NM on March 12-13.

Nashville - Luke Beck vaulted his way to victory and a
provisional national qualfying clearance in the Pole Vault at the Tennessee
State Invitational in Nashville, TN. Beck's clearance of 15 ft 9.25 in. was
over a foot higher than second place, and betters his previous school record of
15 ft 3 in. Beck is currently ranked 14th in the nation among DII pole
vaulters, and is the only freshman to make the list.
"Luke is a special athlete with a great head on his
shoulders. He has the ability to focus all of his effort into a
great vault in competition, which is not very common for college
freshmen," said UAH track coach David Cain.
Richard Wilson continued his outstanding season, as
he ran the fastest time of 49 competitors in the 55m preliminaries with a 6.39.
In the finals, he won with an even faster time of 6.36, which stands as the new
school record. On the national performance list, his 55m time is converted to
6.84 for 60m, which currently ranks him 10th in the nation on the DII
performance list.
"Richard has simply taken his sprinting to the next
level. He is extremely smooth yet powerful out of the blocks, and it is fun to
watch him pull away from his competition," Cain said of Wilson.
More school records were broken as Aaron Lee took
down the record in the 55m Hurdles with a time of 7.97, and placed 9th. Nadia
Araiinejad broke the school record in the Weight Throw with a mark of 27 ft 6
in.
Both the men's and women's Distance Medley Relays
performed well as the men took first place, and the women placed second. The
men's relay finished in a time of 10:29.16, and was made up by Will Rodgers,
Jaion Rayford, Parris Heilman, and Stevie Dolan. The women finished in
12:59.45, and the relay consisted of Jeniifer Cherono, Alex Lopez-Rogina,
Melanie Ferry, and Gwen Kyser.
Jeniffer Cherono was also an event winner in the
Mile, as finished with a time of 5:18.29, which was over three seconds ahead of
the second place finisher. Also placing high, was Leah Sparks who ran a
personal best time of 58.52 in the 400m, placing second. Brad Passen placed
third in the Pole Vault with a clearance of 13 ft7.25 in.
A few others also set personal best times,
as Rebecca Hilt and Latrice Johnson finished with times of 26.16 and 26.27
respectively in the 200m. Allyson Pierce ran an all time best 5k time of 19:36,
over 20 seconds faster than her previous best. Kimaya Johnson also had a great
showing in the 55m Hurdles, placing 4th with a time of 8.61.
The meet was scored as a duel meet against fellow
DII school Clayton State. Both the Chargers and Lady Chargers got the win, as
the men won 63-43 and the women won 87-29.
"Overall this was the best showing we have had over
the many years of competing at TSU. I am really proud of how we performed. I
know if everyone keeps working hard we will be a very strong team at the end of
the season. I am looking forward to heading back to Indiana this weekend on a
banked track where I expect times to really drop."
