VALDOSTA, Ga. – Something had to give as the Chargers took on West Alabama in the opening round of the NCAA Men’s South Region Tennis regional tournament on Thursday. Neither team had tasted victory in the postseason with the Chargers going winless in four tries and West Alabama going 0-for-2.
It was a tightly contested match and when the smoke cleared it would be West Alabama who would advance with a 5-4 victory over the Chargers. West Alabama advanced for the first time in the program's history while the Chargers season ends with a record of 10-9.
The Chargers were ahead early after taking two of the three doubles matches, but UWA stormed back with four wins in singles action to clinch the match.
Andres Buse
and Daniel Canellas
teamed with Davyd Fowler
and Andre
Ipince to claim two points in doubles to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead in the match.
Canellas and Fowler each picked up wins for UAH in singles from the third and fourth positions respectively, but it would be the only wins the Chargers would get. In the top spot, Danish Ahmad went to three sets before defeating Andres Buse 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Tellez beat Ipince 6-4, 6-1, while Wade Covington and James Gardner each claimed points for UWA in the fifth and sixth slots. Covington beat Kyle Smith
