UAH lands six on 2009 GSC Fall All-Academic team PDF

Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2009 Fall All-Academic teams on Friday and six UAH athletes made the cut.

Men's soccer trio Rob Eckensweiler, Tim Mead and Ori Ben Shalom along with women's soccer player Devin Newman are first-time Academic team members, along with team returnees Lauren Burns (women's soccer) and Josh Moshier (men's cross country). In addition, 25 other Chargers made the Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Moshier earned first team All-GSC and All-South Region honors in 2009. The Port Byron, Ill. native is a Physics major with a GPA of 3.76.

Burns played in 15 games this season, scored three goals and had an assists for the Lady Chargers. The senior Elementary Education major from Huntsville has a GPA of 3.88.

Newman, a senior Biology major from Evans, Ga., has a GPA of 3.61. She earned second team All-GSC honors after leading the Lady Chargers in scoring with 22 points off of 10 goals and two assists. Newman also scored six game-winners during the season.

Eckensweiler is a junior Biology major from Mildmay, Ontario, Canada, has a GPA of 3.72. He played in 14 games with 13 starts. He scored one goal. Mead played in 17 games in 2009. The sophomore Chemistry major from Peoria, Ariz. has a 3.60 GPA. Shalom played in 14 games and had one assist for the Chargers. The senior Marketing major from Natanya, Israel has a GPA of 3.71.

Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad.

Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.

Five Chargers land on Spring Academic teams PDF

Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2009 Spring All-Academic teams on and five UAH athletes made the cut. There were two representatives from both softball and men's tennis teams and one from the baseball team. In addition, 10 others made the Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Sophomore David Reiniger (Calgar, Alberta, Canada) is a first timer on the All-Academic team. The Charger infielder is an Aerospace Engineering major with a GPA of 3.66. He played in five games in 2009, batted .250 with a double and two RBI.

Junior Kristina Prater (Athens) and sophomore Alex Lewis (Huntsville) helped lead the UAH softball team to its first appearance in the NCAA Division II National title game back in May.

Prater, a two-time honoree, is a Political Science major with a GPA of 3.20. She is scheduled to graduate this summer and has been accepted to law school. Prater was third on the team on offense, batting .345 with three home runs, one triple, eight doubles and 27 RBI. She became the NCAA and GSC record holder for being hit by a pitch. She was first team All-GSC, first team Daktronics All-Region, first team NFCA All-Region and second team NFCA All-America.

Lewis
Lewis set an NCAA and GSC record for single season and career saves in 2009. The former GSC Freshman of the Year had 18 saves, with an ERA of 0.98 and a record of 3-3. Lewis is a biology major with a GPA of 3.25.

When the UAH men's tennis team made it to the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade, senior Michael Garcia (Bogata, Columbia) and junior Andres Buse (Lima, Peru) were leading the way.

Garcia had a 7-3 record at No. 3 singles and a 6-9 mark in the top doubles spot.  He is a Computer Engineering major with a 4.00 GPA. Meanwhil, Buse is an Industrial and Systems Engineering major with a GPA of 3.76. He played in the No. 1 singles slot, finishing the season with a record of 6-7. He teamed with Garcia in No. 1 doubles to produce a mark of 6-9.

Four UAH players claim spots on Winter Academic teams PDF

Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2009 Winter All-Academic teams on Wednesday and four UAH athletes made the cut. The men's basketball teams had three players to make the Academic teams, while the Lady Chargers had one. In addition, four others made the Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Senior Jordan Brewer (Frankfort, Ind.) returned to the GSC Academic team for the third year in a row. He helped UAH claim a post-season berth as well, starting 25 games and averaging 7.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He is an Accounting major with a GPA of 3.77. Joining Brewer on the All-Academic team was Josh Yost (Guntersville) and Derek Johnston (Lexington). Yost is a sophomore Biology major with a GPA of 3.94, while Johnston is a junior Math major with a GPA of 3.87.

Guard Ashley Boykin (Haleyville) represented the UAH women's team on the GSC Academic squad. The senior led the team in scoring and was the top 3-point shooter in the GSC. Boykin is a pre-med major with a 3.90 GPA.

Nine other UAH players made the 2009 Winter GSC Honor Roll.

The 2009 UAH Chargers Athletics Banquet was held Tuesday, April 7th at the Von Braun Center, South Hall. The Charger family celebrated another successful year of sports.

For the 11th year, Associate Director of Athletics Antoine Bell presided over the event. Among the distinguished list of awards presenters was UAH President Dr. David Williams, Director of Athletics Jim Harris, Assistant Director of Athletics Sheila Ray and Director of Compliance Julie Woltjen.

The Charger seniors were honored and several honors were bestowed during the festive occasion. Below is the complete listing of award winners.

Prater
Senior Erin Zellers (Cross Country) was the recipient of the coveted President's Award. The President's Award is the department's most prestigious honor for those athletes who have completed their eligibility and includes a $1,000 scholarship for additional studies at UAH. It is presented to the athlete who has combined outstanding performance in athletics with academic success and volunteer work in the community throughout their athletic career at UAH.

Junior Derek Johnston (Men's Basketball) received the Scholar-Athlete Award. The Scholar Athlete Award is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average among all intercollegiate teams at UAH who has completed a minimum of 80 hours of course work at UAH.

Junior Kristina Prater (Softball) and sophomore Gwen Kyser (Cross Country) were the co-recipients of the Pamela Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award. The award is presented annually to the top two returning female student-athletes who have combined the best elements of mind and body to achieve distinction for her achievements, and promises to be a future leader in her chosen field.

In addition to the departmental superlatives, 88 Chargers were named Scholar-Athletes. Nine student-athletes received the Gold Scholar Award. The Gold Award goes to student-athletes with GPA's of 3.8 and above. Twenty-six athletes received the Silver Award for holding GPA's between 3.50 and 3.79, while 53 Chargers earned Bronze Awards for having GPA's between 3.0 and 3.49.

Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2008 Fall All-Academic teams on Tuesday and four UAH athletes made the cut. The men's and women's soccer and cross country teams each had one player to make the Academic teams. In addition, 30 others made the Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Senior Erin Zellers (Red Lion, Pa.) and sophomore Josh Moshier (Port Byron, Ill.) represented the UAH Cross Country teams, while Geoffrey Merry (Florence) and Lauren Burns (Huntsville) were chosen from the UAH soccer teams.

Merry
Zellers is a Psychology/Sociology major with a GPA of 3.59. She was also a member of the GSC All-Academic team in 2007. During the season, Zellers was All-South Region and first team All-GSC. She also earned GSC Female Runner of the Week. Meanwhile Moshier, who was second team All-GSC, has a GPA of 3.70 in Undergraduate Studies.

Burns
Merry is a Political Science major with a 3.67 GPA. He played in seven games in goal for the Chargers in 2008 with four starts. He had a record of 1-3-2 with a shutout. He gave up four goals and had 24 saves. Merry is also a repeat member of the GSC All-Academic team from 2007. Burns has an overall GPA of 3.85 in Elementary Education. She played in 15 games with two starts during the season. She tied for the lead on the team in scoring with 10 points off of five goals. She also had one game-winner.
