Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2010 Spring
All-Academic teams on and Andres Buse
of the Men's Tennis team joined Mar Piernavieja
of the Women's Tennis team on the All-Academic teams. In addition, 20 others made the Spring
Academic Honor Roll.
Buse
Buse (Lima, Peru) earned All-Academic honors for the third straight year. Buse had a 5-12 record at No. 1 singles and a 10-8 mark in doubles. He helped lead the Chargers back to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive year. Buse is a an Industrial Systems Engineering major with a 3.81 GPA.
Piernavieja
Piernavieja (Madrid, Spain) is a first time honoree on the All-Academic team. She had a 3-11 record at No. 1 singles and a 5-9 mark in
doubles. Piernavieja is a a Chemistry
major with a 3.42 GPA.

The Spring All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference
Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic
Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must meet all three
of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: 1) an overall
grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for
their entire academic career, 2) a starter or significant contributor
to the squad, and 3) leadership, academic curriculum and community
service. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own
student-athletes. Freshman are not eligible, nor is any student who has
not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member and
passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours towards an identifiable
degree program during the year at that GSC member. The number of
student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of
positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not
broken.

Charger Athletes enjoy night of honors at annual Banquet

The 2010 UAH Chargers Athletics Banquet was held Friday, April 23rd at the Von Braun Center, North Hall. The Charger family celebrated another successful year of sports.
For the 12th year, Associate Director of Athletics Antoine Bell presided over the event. Among the distinguished list of awards presenters was UAH President Dr. David Williams, Director of Athletics Jim Harris, Assistant Director of Athletics Sheila Ray and Director of Compliance Julie Woltjen.
The Charger seniors were honored and several honors were bestowed during the festive occasion. Below is the complete listing of award winners.
Senior Devin Newman
(Women's Soccer) was the recipient of the coveted President's Award. The President's Award is the department's most prestigious honor for those athletes who have completed their eligibility and includes a $1,000 scholarship for additional studies at UAH. It is presented to the athlete who has combined outstanding performance in athletics with academic success and volunteer work in the community throughout their athletic career at UAH.
Matsuo
Freshman Tomoaki Matsuo
(Men's Soccer) received the Scholar-Athlete Award. The Scholar Athlete Award is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average among all intercollegiate teams at UAH who has completed a minimum of 80 hours of course work at UAH.
Senior Latrice Johnson (Women's Track) was the recipient of the Pamela Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award. The award is presented annually to the top returning female student-athlete who has combined the best elements of mind and body to achieve distinction for her achievements, and promises to be a future leader in her chosen field.
In addition to the departmental superlatives, 102 Chargers were named Scholar-Athletes. Twelve student-athletes received the Gold Scholar Award. The Gold Award goes to student-athletes with GPA's of 3.8 and above. Twenty-eight athletes received the Silver Award for holding GPA's between 3.50 and 3.79, while 62 Chargers earned Bronze Awards for having GPA's between 3.0 and 3.49.

Six UAH players earn spots on GSC Winter Academic teams

Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2010 Winter
All-Academic teams on Monday and all six UAH athletes eligible for the award made the cut. The men's basketball team took four of the spots on the team, while both Lady Charger nominees earned honors. In addition, six other UAH basketball players made the Fall
Academic Honor Roll.
For the second year, senior Derek Johnston
(Lexington) and junior
Josh Yost
(Guntersville) earned GSC All-Academic honors. Johnston is a math major with a GPA of 3.87, while Yost is a biology major with a GPA of 3.85. Joining the repeat duo, sophomore All-GSC guard Josh Magette
(Birmingham) and junior forward Elliott Jones
(Tuscaloosa). Jones is a finance major with a GPA of 3.63, while Magette is a business major with a 3.34 GPA.
For the Lady Chargers, junior Andrea Bennett
and sophomore Diana Alsbrook
were named to the All-GSC East Academic team. Bennett is a nursing major boasting a GPA of 3.30, while Alsbrook has a cumulative GPA of 3.72 in Aerospace Engineering.
The
Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports
Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs)
in a
joint vote. Nominees must meet all three of the following
qualifications to

UAH lands six on 2009 GSC Fall All-Academic team

Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2009 Fall All-Academic teams on Friday and six UAH athletes made the cut.
Men's soccer trio Rob Eckensweiler, Tim Mead
and Ori Ben Shalom
along with women's soccer player Devin Newman
are first-time Academic team members, along with team returnees Lauren Burns
(women's soccer) and Josh Moshier (men's cross country). In addition, 25 other Chargers made the Fall Academic Honor Roll.
Moshier
Burns
Moshier earned first team All-GSC and All-South Region honors in 2009. The Port Byron, Ill. native is a Physics major with a GPA of 3.76.
Burns played in 15 games this season, scored three goals and had an assists for the Lady Chargers. The senior Elementary Education major from Huntsville has a GPA of 3.88.
Newman, a senior Biology major from Evans, Ga., has a GPA of 3.61. She earned second team All-GSC honors after leading the Lady Chargers in scoring with 22 points off of 10 goals and two assists. Newman also scored six game-winners during the season.
Eckensweiler is a junior Biology major from Mildmay, Ontario, Canada, has a GPA of 3.72. He played in 14 games with 13 starts. He scored one goal. Mead played in 17 games in 2009. The sophomore Chemistry major from Peoria, Ariz. has a 3.60 GPA. Shalom played in 14 games and had one assist for the Chargers. The senior Marketing major from Natanya, Israel has a GPA of 3.71.
Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad.
Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.

Five Chargers land on Spring Academic teams

Birmingham - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2009 Spring
All-Academic teams on and five UAH athletes made the cut. There were two representatives from both softball and men's tennis teams and one from the baseball team. In addition, 10 others made the Spring
Academic Honor Roll.
Sophomore David Reiniger (Calgar, Alberta, Canada) is a first timer on the All-Academic team. The Charger infielder is an Aerospace Engineering major with a GPA of 3.66. He played in five games in 2009, batted .250 with a double and two RBI.
Junior Kristina Prater (Athens) and sophomore Alex Lewis
(Huntsville) helped lead the UAH softball team to its first appearance in the NCAA Division II National title game back in May.
Prater
Prater, a two-time honoree, is a Political Science major with a GPA of 3.20. She is scheduled to graduate this summer and has been accepted to law school. Prater was third on the team on offense, batting .345 with three home runs, one triple, eight doubles and 27 RBI. She became the NCAA and GSC record holder for being hit by a pitch. She was first team All-GSC, first team Daktronics All-Region, first team NFCA All-Region and second team NFCA All-America.
Lewis
Lewis set an NCAA and GSC record for single season and career saves in 2009. The former GSC Freshman of the Year had 18 saves, with an ERA of 0.98 and a record of 3-3. Lewis is a biology major with a GPA of 3.25.
When the UAH men's tennis team made it to the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade, senior Michael Garcia
(Bogata, Columbia) and junior Andres Buse
(Lima, Peru) were leading the way.
Garcia had a 7-3 record at No. 3 singles and a 6-9 mark in the top doubles spot. He is a Computer Engineering major with a 4.00 GPA. Meanwhil, Buse is an Industrial and Systems Engineering major with a GPA of 3.76. He played in the No. 1 singles slot, finishing the season with a record of 6-7. He teamed with Garcia in No. 1 doubles to produce a mark of 6-9.
