Jefferson City, Tenn. - J.J. Wesley's jumper with seven seconds left lifted Carson-Newman to a surprise 65-64 win over UAH on Monday night. It was the first loss of the season for the Chargers who fell to 3-1, while Carson-Newman improved to 3-1.
Just a week ago, the Chargers blasted the Eagles 74-47 at Spragins Hall. In that game, UAH dominated from start to finish. On Monday, it was Carson-Newman who came out firing, leading by as much as 15 points (39-24) in the first half and 41-30 at halftime.
In the second half, the Chargers got off the deck and came out swinging. A 12-1 run in the first seven minutes erased the deficit and brought the Chargers to within a basket at 44-42 with 12:49 left in the game.
Later in the half, Derek Johnston
nailed a 3-pointer with 8:45 left to give UAH a 51-50 lead. Johnston hit another 3-pointer with 4:36 left to stretch the Charger lead to 62-57. But, Carson-Newman scored six unanswered points to climb back in front. Darren Maxtion's layup with 2:11 left gave the Eagles a 63-62 lead.
A minute later, UAH guard Josh Magette
slashed down the lane and rolled in a layup to put UAH back up 64-63 with 1:12 left. The Chargers had chances to salt away the win when Carson-Newman missed a pair of shots inside the last minute. However, the Eagles kept themselves alive with offensive rebounds.
After Wesley's go-ahead basket, UAH had one more chance, but it fizzled when Josh Yost
was stripped as time expired.
The loss tarnished a stellar night for Johnston who led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. The senior guard was 6-of-11 from the field, all from 3-point range. Magette was 6-for-13 with a pair of 3-pointers and tallied 14 points. Cody Jones
added 12 points and six rebounds, while Elliott Jones
contributed a career-high 11 points and eight rebounds.
Wesley led Carson-Newman with 15 points. Maxtion added 14, while Jordan Dixon and Cameron Sharpe dropped in 12 apiece.
After a short break for Thanksgiving, the Chargers will be on the road facing preseason Gulf South Conference West Division favorite Delta State on Saturday.
