SEARCY, Ark. -- After nearly two weeks off, the Alabama-Huntsville (3-3) baseball team hit the field on Saturday afternoon at Harding (2-6) splittling a doubleheader with the Bisons being no-hit 5-0 in the opener before rallying to a 5-4 win in the nightcap in Searcy, Ark.
After game one that saw only four Chargers reach base, UAH finally got the offense going in the fourth inning of game two. Senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile) was beaned with one out and was followed by a double to right center by senior second baseman Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) giving UAH two aboard with one out. Junior designated hitter Byne Gooden (Millbrook, Ala.) reached on an infield single to the pitcher. HU hurler Patrick Nappi threw the ball away allowing both Huckaby and McCrory to score. Senior catcher then singled back up the middle plating Gooden before sophomore shortstop Corey Trapp launched a double brought Parkman in to score giving UAH a 4-1 lead.
The Bisons would pull within a run of the lead in the sixth with a two-run frame but that is as close as HU would get as both teams traded runs in the seventh to round out the scoring.
Senior Chase Earl (Valley) earned the win going five innings allowing only one earned run while fanning four and walking only two. Junior closer Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.) picked up the save working the seventh inning.
The two squads battle again in a doubleheader on Sunday at Noon.
