Despite committing 34 turnovers, the Lady Chargers found a way to win on Monday night, edging West Georgia 59-56 in the final home game of the season. The win snapped a 10-game losing skid for UAH, who improved to 4-18 and 1-7 in the Gulf South Conference. Meanwhile, West Georgia dipped to 9-16 and 2-6 with the loss.
Candace Lee
led the Lady Chargers with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Amber Whitt
added 10 points in her final home game.
Whitley Mayberry paced West Georgia with 11 points, while Thomassian Wyatt contributed 10.
The Lady Chargers were able to stay alive throughout the game grabbing their share of take-aways, forcing 26 West Georgia turnovers. At the half, UAH would lead 29-26.
In the second half, the game remained tight. The Lady Chargers stretched their lead out to six when a freethrow by Mary Virginia Reeves
made it 48-42 with 8:22 left. However, down the stretch, the Lady Wolves had closed to within a point with under a minute to go at 57-56.
After a turnover by Andrea Bennett, West Georgia had a chance to take the lead. However, Bennett made amends for her mistake by getting a steal on the other end with only 17 seconds left in the game.
After a pair of freethrows by Lee put the Lady Chargers up by three with nine seconds to go, the Lady Wolves had one more shot to tie. However, instead of going for a 3-pointer, Mayberry opted to drive to the basket and was fouled with two seconds left. She missed the front end of a 1-and-1, destroying whatever hope the Lady Wolves had left.
They Lady Chargers travel to Florence on Thursday to face North Alabama in a game that was rescheduled from Saturday, Feb. 13. Gametime is 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
