Normal - Adam Osburn kicked off the outdoor track season with a school record breaking throw in the Shot Put at the Bulldog Relays hosted by Alabama A&M on Saturday.
Osburn's throw of 42'10.25" won the event by five inches and broke previous record of 40'02". Josh Coots also broke the old record as he placed third with his best throw of 41'2.25".
"Adam has a tremendous work ethic and trains very hard. He has the inner drive to become a truly outstanding thrower in the Shot Put," said UAH track coach David Cain.
Timothy McCulloch made his debut as a Charger by breaking the school record in the Triple Jump with a mark of 43'6.50". That mark was well beyond the previous school record of 40'10.50" that was set in 2007 by Daniel Saint. McCulloch's jump place him third overall at the meet.
"Timothy just joined our team a few weeks ago, and I wasn't sure if he was ready to compete yet. Obviously, he is ready and proved that he will be a valuable asset to our team," said Cain. Luke Beck broke the outdoor school record in the Pole Vault, winning with a vault of 14'6".
The Chargers had several other event winners, as Cary Hale won the 400m with a time of 50.78, Stacia Watts won the 400m Hurdles with a 1:13.29, and Julia Nagle won the Pole Vault with a clearance of 9'00.25". Parris Heilman set a personal best time in the Mile, as he placed second with a time of 4:33.21.
"I was pleased with how we performed in what I call our warm up meet for the outdoor season. Although we held out some of our top runners who needed a rest, I very happy with what we accomplished at this first meet."
