MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Giving up seven unearned runs thanks to four errors, the Alabama-Huntsville (16-9) dropped a midweek non-conference tilt 9-3 to Montevallo (7-22) on Wednesday afternoon at Kermit A. Johnson field in Montevallo.
The first two innings saw the Falcons jump out to a 6-0 lead thanks mostly in part to two defensive miscues by the Charger defense. UM added a run in the fourth before UAH would finally end the Falcon's shutout hopes with a lone run in the sixth. Junior left fielder Corey Whittle (Cullman) leadoff the frame with a single back up the middle before junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile), the reigning GSC East Division Player of the Week, laced a single down the right field line that got the goose egg off the scoreboard for the Chargers.
The Chargers fourth error of the game proved costly in the bottom of the sixth when Montevallo answered right back with a run of their own. UAH took advantage of a Montevallo miscue in the eighth to push across two more runs but that is as close as the Chargers would get. Whittle was beaned to leadoff the frame before Parker reached on a fielder's choice as the UM first baseman threw the ball away giving the Chargers runners on the corner. McCrory stepped up and delivered again with a single to right. Parker later scored on a ground out by senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham).
Sophomore hurler Ryan Griffin (Athens) took the loss working the first three innings allowing seven runs but only one was earned. Freshman Cody Barrett (Mufreesboro), and juniors Corbin Holland (Gadsden), Jake Tubbs (Childersburg) and Byne Gooden (Millbrook) each worked in relief.
The Chargers return home to Joe Davis Stadium this weekend hosting Oakland City with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon followed by a single tilt on Sunday at noon.
