Southaven, Miss. - Mother Nature blew through the entire Memphis area on Friday and Saturday caused the Gulf South Conference Tournament to be halted for the second year in a row. Also, for the second straight year, Valdosta State was the beneficiary of what wound up being a single elimination tournament as they were the only team to win all three of their games.
The three other remaining teams in the tournament, UAH, Arkansas-Monticello and West Florida will join Valdosta State in the South Regional tournament May 14-16. VSU will very likely keep the top seed and host one of the regionals, while the No. 2 seed and other regional site will either be at UAH or in Winter Park, Fla. at Rollins College. The Regional tournament field will be announced on May 10 on NCAA.com.
Freshman Pitcher Whitney Gilbert
and senior outfielder Erin Duke
made the All-Tournament team on the abbreviated weekend. Gilbert pitched two shutouts, including her first career no-hitter. She allowed only five hits in her two starts, struck out seven and walked four. Duke was 5-for-11 at the plate in the three games. She had an RBI, a walk and three steals.
