Director of Compliance
Julie Woltjen enters her 23rd year at UAH and her
eighth as Director of Athletics Compliance. She also serves as head tennis
coach, entering her sixth season in that arena. Prior to her present duties,
she spent 13 years at UAH as the Assistant Director of Athletics/Marketing and
Athletic Relations for the Chargers, five of those doubling as Senior Woman
Administrator. She also currently serves as UAH’s NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills
program coordinator. Although she has a number of publication and public
relations awards to her credit, one of her most favorite recognitions is the
ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Academic Team Award that the 2007 UAH
women’s tennis team received last season for attaining an overall team gpa of
3.2 or better. In addition to the team award, three players received ITA
Academic Player Awards for attaining an overall gpa of 3.5 or better.
Woltjen became involved in tennis at the age of seven. At 15 she
started teaching and began her road trip of holding various positions in tennis
clubs in the Greater Houston (TX) and St. Louis (MO) areas, positions she held
at various times from 15 through her mid-20’s. Woltjen added track to her list
of sports when she went to college. After college, she taught elementary
physical education, coached junior high and high school athletics, and was a
teaching tennis pro. After teaching and coaching, and before coming to UAH,
Woltjen served as the assistant to the executive director of the Bluebonnet
Bowl for four bowl games. Her final seasons there were sell-out crowd games.
As Woltjen assumed athletics administrative duties, she put
tennis on the shelf. However, she has been active as a volunteer for a number
of community and University committees over the years. Some of her favorite
activities include coaching youth fast pitch softball, volunteering at Vacation Bible School,
and being a Girl Scout Leader. She was recognized as an Outstanding Leader and
Outstanding Volunteer by the Girl Scouts of North Alabama and is a past officer
for the Rotary Club of Madison. She has served on a number of UAH campus boards
and committees including the Judicial Board and Campus Safety.
Woltjen earned a B.A. degree in health and
physical education, a B.A. degree in journalism (both from Trinity University,
San Antonio, TX), and a Master's in Business
Administration (University of North Alabama, Florence).
She and her husband Mark have two daughters, Lauren and Shelby.
