HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's and women's track and field team return to action this weekend, traveling to Bloomington, Ind., on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28, to compete in the Indiana Relays at the Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The Chargers will face a field again that includes several of the top Division 1 programs in the nation. The host, Indiana, bring the highest-ranked team into the event with its No. 6 men's squad, while other notables such as Purdue, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Louisville and South Florida will also contend in the meet.
The two-day event begins with the men's weight throw on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. CST, while the women's 60-meter hurdles kicks off the running events at 2:10 p.m. The first day is slated to wrap up after the final event scheduled for 8 p.m. The meet will commence on Saturday, starting with the women's weight throw at 9 a.m. Track events also begin on the 200-meter oval at 9 a.m. with the women's 200 meters. Events are scheduled through the final event at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday.
UAH opened its 2012 campaign two weeks ago at the UAB Blazer Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Chargers notched three NCAA Provisional qualifying marks in the opening weekend, including one on the men's side and two on the women's side. Senior Richard Wilson clocked a provisional time of 6.94 in the 60 meters, ranking 30th in the nation. Senior Latrice Johnson and junior Kedeshia Simpson currently rank 11th in the country in the 60 meters with their provisional times of 7.70.
In addition, senior Andrew Cole and freshman Alex Buchanan set new school records in the high jump (6-6 3/4) and triple jump (44-7 1/2), respectively, in the season-opener.
Next up, UAH will travel back north to Geneva, Ohio to compete in the NCAA Division II Team Challenge. The event is slated for Feb. 4 at the SPIRE Institute.
