Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – After a thrilling five-set match, the University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team edged the No. 3-seeded West Georgia Wolves 3-2 on Friday night in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
The No. 6-seeded Lady Chargers (12-20) made big play after big play against the higher-seeded Wolves (15-15) and now advance to the GSC Tournament semifinals tomorrow where they will meet Christian Brothers for a trip to the conference tournament championship.
The match capped off what was to that point a rather boring opening day to the conference tournament, going the full five sets and seeing UAH advance after a 15-13 fifth set victory. Both of the earlier matches ended in 3-0 straight set victories.
The fifth set began back-and-forth, but UAH eventually shot out to a 12-7 lead. West Georgia would battle back to a 12-11 UAH lead, then 14-13.
Haley Snyder then smashed home the game-winning kill to advance UAH to the semifinal round with a 3-2 match victory.
The first set was an early indication of how close-knit this match was going to be, as the Wolves eked out a 27-25 victory. UAH would take the next two sets 25-19 and 25-18, respectively to grasp control of the match.
Leading the match 2-1, West Georgia would not go away quietly and forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-20 fourth set win.
It was as balanced of an attack as the Lady Chargers have had all season, as four players finished in double figures in kills. Snyder led the way with 16 kills, including the crucial game-winner in the fifth set.
Kelsey Williams had 13 kills in what could have been the last match of her career, while also adding four blocks.
Olivia Bauman added 11 kills of her own.
Playing her most complete match of the season was
Kendall Knisley, who notched a team-high six blocks and 10 kills.
Kelly Wilson also stepped up as a senior leading the team with her 30 assists.
All-Conference performer
Stacey Sargent was solid defensively once again, leading the team in digs with 26.
Up next for the Lady Chargers will be the Lady Bucs of Christian Brothers, who knocked off West Alabama earlier today in straight sets. First serve from Pensacola, Fla., is set for 2:30 p.m. with a trip to the championship on the line.
CBU defeated UAH in both meetings this year, but the most recent match was played the full five sets to decide a winner.
