Thornton to Join Tennis Coaching Staff

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Head Coach Daniel Finn and the UAH tennis program are announced Thursday the addition of John Thornton to the coaching staff for the 2012-13 season.

Thornton comes to UAH with extensive coaching and tennis experience. His most previous stint was as head coach for the Tennessee Wesleyan College men's and women's tennis programs. Thornton coached at TWC for four years while leading his program to a couple of NAIA National Tournament appearances as well as garnering national recognition in the polls.

“John is a great coach with experience and a competitive nature. We actually coached against each other at rival schools for three years. We definitely had our moments where we went head to head, but at the end of it, we both were the same type of coach,” said Finn.

A four-year letterwinner for the University of Tennessee, Thornton has been around the sport his entire life.

Thornton also worked as a tennis pro at The Fairmont in Kona, Hawaii. While there he taught several age groups and held multiple coaching and training sessions.

“I have no doubt that we will make a good team and push the program forward,” said Finn. “John is one of the better coaches I have seen at coaching doubles, and he features a meticulous nature to technique. He will be a valuable asset to the success of our program.”
