HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The UAH tennis teams were in action this past weekend, and saw its men's doubles team make a run to the finals before finishing runners-up.
Christopher Kano and Raphael Oliveira stole the show for the Chargers at the first annual Charger Stampede played at the UAH tennis facility, as the doubles team pulled off a huge upset over the No. 1-ranked doubles team of Shorter's Romain Lefevre and Romain Ferriera.
The two stormed back from being down 7-5 in the second set and down 4-1 in the third. The tandem looks like a force to be reckoned with once the 2013 season rolls around this spring.
Kano also made a deep run for the UAH men in the singles draw, as he made an appearance in the semi-finals before losing to top-ranked Lefevre of Shorter. Kano did pick up a huge win over the No. 45th-ranked player in NAIA, Josh Reason from Auburn Montgomery, 6-1 and 6-2 along the way.
Thales Castro bounced back in a huge way after losing his opening match to place him in the consolation bracket. Castro ran the table once he got there, eventually knocking off Marcelo Alvim of Lincoln Memorial in the final, 6-4 and 6-3 to win the men's singles consolation draw.
The UAH women also showed well, as all five players in action made it out of the first round before falling in the round of 16.
Ale Pacheco,
Brandi Dykes,
Maria Lawton,
Lina Carvajal and
Kasi McDonald all played very well against a very tough field.
Pacheco and Dykes picked up a big win over Lincoln Memorial's Erica Stephens and Morgan Taylor, before falling in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions.
“This was a great tournament for us and a good measuring stick for me to know what we are capable of,” said UAH Head Coach Daniel Finn. “All of these players impressed me a lot and they all did great things in an extremely tough tournament. I am very proud of each and every one of them. I know this going to be a special year for UAH tennis.”
