Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lady Chargers started off the 2012 Country Inn & Suites Tournament on the right foot with a 3-1 win over Henderson State on Thursday night at Spragins Hall.
After dropping the first set, 25-20, UAH (3-2) stormed back to take the next three sets and kick start their own tournament with a win.
Finding themselves trailing 9-11 in the second set, the Lady Chargers took the next four points to jump out front, 13-11. That four-point swing was led by freshman
Olivia Bauman, who serviced all four points. The strong UAH swing forced the visiting Lady Reddies to burn a timeout, and led UAH to pull even in the match with a 25-18 win.
The third set started off 3-0 in favor of UAH, as
Angela Thurmond blocked an attack for a point and also recorded a kill to start strong. Henderson State (1-5) would come within two, but that is the closest they would play the host team in the third set, as the Lady Chargers ran away with a dominating 25-14 win.
UAH would send the crowd home early as they downed HSU 25-19 in the fourth and would-be final set. Thurmond finished with five kills in the set, while
Kelly Wilson and
Ashton Baker both set up beautiful balls for the attackers.
Leading the way in the first of the four games UAH will play this weekend was Thurmond, who finished with a game-high 19 kills and five blocks.
Stacey Sargent recorded 12 kills and
Haley Snyder tallied nine.
Kelsey Williams also finished with nine kills and two blocks.
UAH put forth a balanced attack in the win, as
Kendall Knisley and
Kirsten Rousseau also played outstanding at the net. The two combined for 13 kills and four blocks.
Wilson and Baker were again brilliant. The two setters racked up a combined 53 assists.
Kennedie Lariscy was her usual self, playing outstanding defensively. The freshman limited the Lady Reddies to just one ace. She finished with 11 digs in the match.
The Lady Chargers get back to action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. UAH will take on Albany State in that match and will follow with Florida Tech at 5:00 p.m.
