Magette Drafted 23rd by D-Fenders in D-League Draft

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Former University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball star Josh Magette was selected in the second round of the 2013 NBA Development League Draft on Friday night as the Los Angeles D-Fenders – the D-League affiliate of the Los Angeles Lakers – selected the program's all-time leader in assists with the 23rd pick of the draft.

Last year, Magette starred for Landstede Basketball in the Dutch Basketball League, and he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Zwolle Basketball Days after scoring 31 points while dishing out six assists and collecting three steals in the championship game of the tournament.

A four-year starter for the Blue and White, Magette was a two-time All-American, and he rewrote the record books in becoming not only the GSC's assist leader but also the league's career leader in steals. The Birmingham, Ala., native helped the Chargers reach new heights during his time in the Rocket City, guiding the team to back-to-back NCAA South Region championships and a pair of Elite Eight berths.

With Magette being drafted Friday night, the Chargers have five former players in the professional ranks as Zane Campbell and Jaime Smith are teammates in Portugal, while Jason Smith and Joe Smith are continuing their pro careers.

The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA's official minor league. Featuring 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA franchises, the NBA D-League is a proven developer of talent: 27 percent of players in the NBA at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season boasted NBA D-League experience, and the league continues to develop coaches, referees, and front-office staff for the NBA and its teams.
