SAN ANTONIO | The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced its 2014 Hall of Fame class late Friday night, and renowned University of Alabama in Huntsville softball coach
Les Stuedeman will be a member of the four-person group that will be inducted at the organization's annual convention next year in Las Vegas.
The announcement was made at this year's meeting in San Antonio as NFCA First Vice President and chairperson of the Hall of Fame committee Kathryn Gleason stepped to the podium after the year's class was inducted to name the four members of 2014 NFCA Hall of Fame class. Stuedeman will be joined next year by Oklahoma City University head coach Phil McSpadden, SUNY Cortland head coach Julie Lenhart, and NFCA Executive Director Lacy Lee Baker.
Stuedeman has created a national power during her tenure in Huntsville, guiding the Chargers to an impressive 846-266-1 (.760) record as the only softball coach that UAH has ever known. The Chargers have averaged 47 wins per season under Stuedeman, and her teams have never had a losing season.
Â
In her team's most recent campaign, the squad captured the regular season Gulf South Conference title, finished runner-up at the GSC tournament, and won the NCAA South 2 Regional to advance to the Super Regional. The 2013 team featured six All-GSC selections – including the Pitcher of the Year and the Freshman of the Year while Stuedeman was named the Coach of the Year – and three Chargers earned All-American status.
Â
The third winningest active coach in Division II, Stuedeman became just the 17th coach in Division II history to win 800 games as she passed the milestone with a win in the regular season finale in 2012. Through the 2012 year, she ranked 13th among active coaches in winning percentage across all divisions.
Â
Stuedeman's teams have earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament 16 times – including a stretch of 11 in a row with the team's 2013 berth – and the Chargers have captured four South Region titles (1999, 2001, 2009 and 2011). In 2009 and 2011, she guided the Chargers to the brink of a national championship finishing as the Division II Softball National Championships runner-up both seasons. Stuedeman and her staff have been named South Region Coaching Staff of the Year six times (1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2009 and 2011).
Â
Under Stuedeman, the Chargers have appeared in 11 Gulf South Conference Championship games, winning eight titles, including three in a row from 2006 through 2008. The Chargers have an all-time GSC tournament record of 60-22 – the best mark in the conference.
Â
In her extraordinarily successful collegiate coaching stint, Stuedeman also has eight GSC Coach of the Year titles to her credit as she garnered the award in 1996, 2001, and 2002 before winning it four consecutive seasons from 2008-11 in addition to last season's award.
The induction will mark the third such honor for Stuedeman as she was enshrined into the Huntingdon Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this year, and she is also a member of the Vestavia Hills Athletics Hall of Fame.
