HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Snapping a two-match slide, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team knocked off visiting Lincoln Memorial by a 6-3 score on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Chargers move to 5-3 on the season with the victory, and LMU stumbles to 3-2.
“I am very proud of the ladies today and how they handled the elements and found a way – as a team – to beat a quality team like LMU,” said Head Coach Daniel Finn following the win.
The Lady Chargers owned a 2-1 lead after doubles play thanks to the second and third pairings.
Katie Bryant and
Alejandra Pacheco blanked the opposition at the No. 2 to win 8-0, and
Jessica Groupierre and
Kasi McDonald won by an 8-2 score at the third position.
Lina Carvajal put the team up 3-1 as she won 6-3, 6-3 at the second position in singles, but LMU captured the points at both the No. 1 and No. 4 to tie the match at 3-3.
Pacheco proceeded to cruise to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to provide both No. 6
Brandi Dykes and
Maria Lawton at the third spot the chance to seal the match for the hosts. Lawton found herself in a three-set match, but Dykes won easily 6-0, 6-2 to give UAH the victory.
Lawton would win the final point 6-4, 6-7 (10), 6-1 to create the final 6-3 margin of victory.
The Lady Chargers will continue play on Thursday as they welcome Division I member Western Kentucky for a noon start.
