Hockey Staff Excited for Incoming Freshman Class

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- With the highly-anticipated 2013-14 season approaching for the UAH Hockey team, Head Coach Mike Corbett and his staff are pleased to announce their incoming freshman class, the future of Charger hockey for years to come.
 
Entering its first season in the WCHA, these 13 recruits will bear a large responsibility in helping to put UAH Hockey back on the map. It will mark the first recruiting class of the WCHA era for the team and will pave the way for future Chargers as well.
 
"The UAH Hockey Class of 2018 will be the foundation of our program. Each of these 13 student-athletes were brought to UAH with the knowledge that they will serve as the first class at UAH to compete as members of the WCHA, and will set the tone for what we are looking to accomplish as we rebuild our program," said Assistant Coach Gavin Morgan.
 
Morgan, along with the previous staff at UAH, have brought in a class unlike any before in UAH Hockey history. Elite prospects, quality student-athletes, and winners both on and off the ice, highlight this group of individuals. There have been standout recruits in years passed, but this class will be expected to compete and see significant minutes in their freshman campaigns.
 
"We are extremely excited to have such a large freshmen class to help us reach the next level in Division I hockey. These 13 young men bring their unique personalities, skill sets and enthusiasm to the team, and they will work together to contribute to the growth of our program," said Head Coach Mike Corbett.
 
Those players are listed below, with a brief summary of their hockey background:
 
Joakim Broberg | F | 6-3 | Lidkoping, Sweden
 
Played for Anders Ljungstedts in native country of Sweden…Contributed to team's fifth- place finish in the country in 2009-2010…Played with Swedish U-18 national team during sophomore year….Helped lead U-20 team to Swedish national championship in 2011-2012…Expected to major in Business.
 
Carmine Guerriero | G | 5-11 | Montreal, Quebec
 
Spent two seasons with the Hawkesbury Hawks of the Central Canada Hockey league…Appeared in 94 games over the course of the two seasons…Recorded 45 career wins and seven shutouts… Held season-highs of a 2.66 goals against average and a .919 save percentage…Plans to major in Management.
 
Brandon Clowes | F | 6-0 | Calgary, Alberta Canada
 
Played in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for four seasons with the Olds Grizzlys….With the Grizzlys, Clowes appeared in 181 games including the playoffs over four years…Scored 76 career goals, along with 74 assists to total 150 points….Second on the team  in goals (20), assists (25) and points (45) in 2011-2012….Led team with 30 goals and 58 points in his final season…Helped lead team to playoffs during 2012-2013 season…Also played volleyball for a season…Plans to major in Education.
 
Regan Soquila | F | Merritt, British Columbia
 
Played for three seasons in the British Colombia Hockey League (BCHL) with the Merritt Centennials… …The forward from British Columbia appeared in 172 games, amassing over 100 assists in his three years with the Centennials to go along with 61 goals and 174 points… Earned Rookie of the Year Honors in 2010-2011…Led team with 54 assists and 70 points in 2011-2012, while also leading the team in goals (25), assists (34) and points (59) in 2012-2013…Helped Merritt earn a playoff berth in his final season….Played Soccer and Badminton in high school at Merritt Secondary…Successful off the ice as well, receiving an Academic Scholar Award…Intends to major in Civil Engineering.
 
Cody Marooney | F | Faribault, Minnesota
 
Bounced back and forth between the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and the United States Hockey League (USHL) during his high school career….Appeared in 153 career games with the Aberdeen Wings (NAHL), Sioux City Musketeers (USHL) and the Brookings Blizzard (NAHL) …. Named captain junior and senior year with the Musketeers and Blizzard…..Notched 19 career goals, 36 assists and 35 points…Also played four years of lacrosse while at Shattack-St. Mary's High School….Expected to major in Biology while attending UAH.
 
Wade Schools | D | Enfield, Connecticut
 
Appeared in 167 games from 2009-2013 with the Springfield Pics of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL)…Tallied eight career goals and 27 assists to finish with 35 career points…Anticipating to major in Business while at UAH.
 
Matt Larose | G | Nanaimo, British Columbia
 
Played in the British Columbia Hockey League for two seasons with the Trail Smoke Eaters and the Alberni Valley Dogs…Also played for the Wellington Dukes from the Ontario Junior Hockey League in 2012-2013…Finished with 38 career wins and five shutouts while  increasing his win output each season…Intends to major in Management at UAH.
 
Brent Fletcher | F | West Minister, British Columbia
 
Spent 2010-2013 with the Merritt Centennials of the British Colombian Hockey League…Appeared in 158 games for the Centennials….Totaled 18 goals and 29 assists for a total of 47 points…. Also teammates with current freshman forward Regan Soquila in 2012-2013…Was on the honor roll while at New Westminster High School…Expected to major in Civil Engineering at UAH.
 
Brandon Carlson | D | Huntington Beach, California
 
Appeared in 208 games with four separate teams from the United States Hockey League  (USHL) and one team from the North American Hockey League (NAHL)….Tallied 11 career goals and 31 assists to finish with 42 points…Contributed to the Fargo Force's  USHL finals appearance in 2009-2010…Won NAHL Championship with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in 2010-2011.
 
Stephen McKenna  | F | South Boston, Massachusetts
 
Spent two seasons with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL)….Totaled 11 goals and 24 assists to finish with a career total of 35 points.
