HUNTSVILLE | The first edition of the 2014 NCAA Baseball Regional Polls were released this afternoon and the UAH Chargers checked in at No. 6 in South Region.
The Chargers (32-13, 20-7 GSC) own a record of 30-12 in region and are 2-4 against teams ranked in the top eight of the South Region poll. UAH is also the only team in the region to take a series from West Florida, who ranks No. 2 in the poll.
Defending National Champion Tampa claimed the No. 1 spot, not surprisingly as the Spartans own a record of 42-2 and are the current No. 1 team in the country in all polls of Division II baseball. SSC-member Lynn was No. 2, West Florida was No. 3 and GSC-foe Delta State was No. 4.
Florida Southern (No. 5), Saint Leo (No. 7) and Nova Southeastern (No. 8) rounded out the poll.
Only six teams will qualify for the NCAA South Regional, with three automatic bids coming via the GSC Tournament Champion, SIAC Tournament Champion and Sunshine State Conference regular season champion. Because no SIAC team is ranked in the poll, the team who wins the SIAC Tournament will in all likelihood take the No. 6 seed in the regional.
Because the SIAC Champion will take a bid, assuming Tampa or Lynn win the SSC regular season (Tampa is five games up in the loss column with six SSC games left) and West Florida/Delta State win the GSC Tournament, only the top five teams in the poll will qualify. Of course, there is plenty of baseball left to be played and a wide variety of scenarios still exist.
UAH has won 10-straight games and is its best baseball of the season.
Drew Eiland and
Tyler Howell each boast an 8-1 record, while the offense has been a tear of late.
The Chargers barely missed out on a regional last year and have hopes of making their second trip in three years this season. A series victory over rival West Alabama this weekend at Charger Park will go a long way towards solidifying a spot in the Regional.
The next installment of the rankings will be released next Wednesday, April 30, before the selection show takes place on Sunday, May 11, at 9 p.m. CT.
The regionals will be played May 15-18 at the site of the No. 1 seed (currently Tampa, Fla.), while the Division II Championship will be held in Cary, N.C., on May 24-31.
